On a technicality, as long time poster Nehor once demonstrated; this phrase has been shown to be a one off which the Church has since official retracted.

However, the following similar but completely different phrase is alive and well and being promoted in Mormonism today.

"when the prophet speaks, the debate is over"

Spot the difference? No, neither could I......

I'm going to use this when people ask me why I left.

I'll say, "Because I started thinking."

If I recall correctly, it was repudiated in private correspondence between a member of the FP (prophet?) and a clergyman from the Catholic Church -- not through any official channels within the LDS Church. I could be wrong, but this is how I remember it...

Why would the prophet want to retract that phrase? It was probably somebody lower on the ladder who still found it useful to keep thinking.

Well technically I guess the results are the same. But even if the debate is over you can think about it. But just shut up about it. Don't say a word.

Last night, my wife and I were watching a documentary and the phrase "The truth shall set you free." was stated. She leaned over and said with a smile, "except in Mormonism."

You know, this is interesting. In the true confines of the religion, truth actually imprisons a person. You become stuck between your new ideas and the traditions of your fathers and mothers. You take a huge step when deciding to follow the truth. It comes at great price. A pearl, you might say... Is the truth worth the cost?
