I think the reason why it took me 28 years to discover dirty little church history is because I was busy most of my life. Lets face it, while I was young and in high school I didn't really pay to much attention to church the only thing I knew is that I had to keep going because I believed in it. I didn't really dive into church history because that would be to freaking boring. I was more into video games, doing stuff with friends, and basically having a good time.

Then the mission hit and the church testimony really sinks in. Also on a mission you can't read any non approved material. Although, I did read 4 books on Porter Rockwell's biography… When I got home from my mission there was no question about my testimony I believed it full out.

Then I went to engineering school and that basically consumed my life along with dating Mormon chicks.

It wasn't until after I was out of school and had more time on my hands when I was able to discover church history. Before I was kind of curious but I just had no time to look at because I had a church calling to do or I had homework to do.

Time is the biggest reason why I was able to leave Mormonism. No time was the biggest reason that kept me in Mormonism.

I think the demands on time are intentional so that people don't sit back and take a look at what's really happening in their lives. Church members are too busy to ponder if they're happy, if the church's claims make sense, if they are living the kind of life they want.

At one point, when my wife was in the Relief Society presidency and I was elders quorum president (and we had four small children), we barely had time to do anything but church stuff. Sundays were brutal.

Oh that does sound brutal! I thought I had it bad at some points.

I was the ward clerk while I was at school. On Sundays I would have meetings all morning, then there was church, then tithing, and then I would get changed at the church and head over to the school to work on a group project. Damn that sucked.

We literally scheduled our meetings so they wouldn't overlap, so we just took turns watching the kids while the other one was in a meeting. Sucked, indeed.

This happened to me in a pretty busy time in my life. I had a bishopric calling, my full-time job, working on a book, taking care of 4 kids, being the democratic delegate, and weeding a massive lawn.

I spent about 15 minutes per night while brushing my teeth and doing the dishes looking up anti-mormon literature and watching youtube episodes of Ed Decker's the god makers. After about 4 days or so of this type of study and maybe a little Ouija board time, I lost it all.
