MDD: Google is your Friend Unless you are LDS

Post by _DrW »

Just saw a very short lived thread over on MDD.

http://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/57709
(Google is your friend unless you are LDS)

I Googled as suggested in the OP, and damn.

Check it out for yourself. No wonder Minos closed the thread.

(My head hurts.)

Please don't force to go to that place. Can you give me an idea of what the thread is about?

Here is the text from the OP. I will leave the rest to your imagination.

Earlier today I entered the search term Lying for the Lord into Google without quotes. The three suggested next level search terms returned by Google were:
lying for the lord Mormon
lying for the lord brigham young
lying for the lord mitt romney

The top hit on the first page was:
Lying for the Lord – MormonWiki.org

I scrolled down for five pages and nearly* every entry on every page had to do with the LDS Church. I didn’t bother to scroll to the sixth page.

Remember, the search text string was entered without quotes.

I was simply astounded - and disturbed.

This is not an issue that is in the past such as polygamy, the priesthood ban or blood atonement. This is not a social policy issue about which conservatives can reasonably disagree with liberals, or Catholics with Mormons.

Nobody I know would honestly say that institutionalized lying is acceptable or a desirable attribute to be associated with any church - Christian or otherwise.
What do faithful members think about this apparently strong association of dishonesty and the LDS Church, as reflected on the internet?
- Is there justification for this?
- Is the reputation unearned?
- Is this apparently widespread perception (fully acknowledged on MormonWiki.org) unfair?
- Is the principle simply misunderstood by non-Mormons?

What say ye?

I hadn't thought of that, but yes, "lying for the Lord" (or "theocratic ethics") seems to be a uniquely Mormon idea, and one with a long history.

A couple of them defended the practice of lying for the lord. Whoops. Apologists aren't supposed to admit that.

Yep, they're supposed to lie for the Lord, not tell the truth. Duh.

You like that one? You also might enjoy searching on bleeding the beast (feeling justified in defrauding the government because it's evil anyway).

I get:
... polygamy
... definition
... flds
... Mormons

I googled "lying for the lord" once and happened upon the MormonWiki site. It is an evangelical site that fools you at first glance.

Mitt Romney doesn't lie for the Lord. He lies for the same "greater cause" that he said his sons have been working for instead of military service... getting him elected.
