If anyone knows how to reach John Hamer, I would really like to know his thoughts on the following:

According to his interview on Mormon Expressions, I was under the impression that the CofC was not going to be selling historic sites to the LDS church.

I'll never understand this addiction the LDS Church has to buying all this historical crap. Instead of doing some good with the money, they waste it in doing things like this or building monuments or malls. I'm pretty sure the Lord wouldn't want this, but I don't think they spend much time considering that.

There's a triumphalism in LDS circles about these types of purchases involving the LDS church and the CoC. The only reason I knew about it was because some lady in my wife's ward was talking about the miraculous nature of it/signs of the times or something like that. In her eyes, this was a sign of the truthfulness of the LDS church. I don't know what she thinks about the LDS church closing dozens of wards in Chile and the Philippines, my guess is those don't count when you can say you nabbed Haun's Mill from the CoC.

I think this has more to do with basic human nature than with Mormonism. It reminds me of a Catholic friend of mine who views Protestantism as an ongoing plot to undermine the credibility of Catholicism...I guess it's easier to indulge in conspiracism than to contemplate the fact that Christianity in general is in decline.

Due to its remote location and its susceptibility to vandalism, Community of Christ has never been able to develop the Haun's Mill site. (Every marker we've ever placed at the site has been vandalized; local high school students tend to use the site for drinking parties.) Because there was essentially no chance Community of Christ would ever develop it, I've long thought that Haun's Mill would be the best option to sell, if an appropriate price could be negotiated.

The resources Community of Christ gains will allow us to preserve and maintain our primary developed sacred and historic sites --- including Kirtland Temple and the Joseph & Emma Smith historic sites and graves in Nauvoo --- in perpetuity. The resulting endowment will allow Community of Christ Historic Sites to function completely independent of Community of Christ's annual operating budget. This means that the core sites will be able to be maintained forever without regard to the church's size or tithing income.

In addition, the transfer will allow the site to be developed for pilgrims and tourists, so it should be a win-win for everyone with Latter Day Saint heritage.

(I was aware of this pending transaction when I recorded my recent Mormon Expressions Podcast; everything I said in that interview was said with this sale in mind and it all still stands.)

You assume she knows. I'd bet she doesn't. I'd also bet that even if she did, she'd not see the significance.
