Mormon Church Meetings are Hell?

Post by _consiglieri »

For decades, I have heard the Mormon definition of damnation as being in a place where one's progression is stopped.

I find it ironic that LDS church meetings now qualify for the LDS definition of damnation.

Is there no help for the widow's son?

"So now I'm praying for the end of time
To hurry up and arrive
Cause if I gotta spend another minute with you
I don't think that I can really survive
I'll never break my promise or forget my vow
But God only knows what I can do right now
I'm praying for the end of time
It's all that I can do
Praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you!!!"
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Can you unpack this for me Consig, are you saying that because Church meetings never get passed milk for meat, progression is stopped?

I would have to agree. The problem though is how to liven it up without people hanging their testimonies on being entertained at Church? That is essentially the question that will be asked by every GA when this issue is brought up. I have recommend Wards and/or Stakes break their fast on Sunday with a potluck. I have also recommended a "school of the prophets" (a discussion group) for "advanced" Gospel Doctrine students. No dice and I have the ear of some who are pretty high up in the Church. If I recall correctly, my potluck idea may have resulted in such being forbidden in the CHI though I also know of some wards that used to do it.

The problem is that there are too many people who like it this way. They are offended by anything that is not extremely somber or sober. A little humor or debate causes conniptions. They are seen as humble believers (most are) and the Church goes to great lengths to protect them. I am full of humor and cheer (and nothing else besides brains and muscle  ) yet I also consider myself a humble believer. To me, the Gospel ought to make one happy and energetic with a lively mind.

There is nothing wrong with doing these things (feasts and discussion groups) outside the auspices of the Church and perhaps that is the way it should be. The Church provides the foundation, you do the works to make the gospel alive in your life.

My wife enjoys yard work and gardening. She told me that it's good for her soul. I said, "It's good for your soul and you enjoy it. That's better than religion".

"Yeah, and I don't have to listen to a bunch of BS.", she replied.

I pondered that for a few days. How can anything be good for your soul if you don't enjoy it?

God's speed to heaven, my friend. Get thee out of the 3-hr church block and find progress.

I think the secret lies in aiming toward a spiritually uplifting message, rather than a recitation of past sayings and writings. This would apply both to Sacrament talks and planned lessons in the classes.

When I used to visit the services of other religious traditions, I always looked for a spiritually uplifting message that could help carry me throughout the week.

Fortunately, as Poelman once infamously articulated, you don't need the Church in order to live The Gospel...

I have a homework assignment for you. Are you ready? Attend catholic mass every sunday for one month. Let us know what you think. Then, attend the lutheran church service for one month, and let us know what you think.

I would be interested in what you think of the catholic mass. But you will need to handle it as a day of obligation so that if you miss it, you will need to confess your sin to the priest. And yes, you must confess you sin to the priest. No excuses that you are a Mormon.
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world.
