The ward rumor mill.......

And from the "He must have been sinning department"

My wife got an email (from her VT) today asking her if she needs help, from the relief society, for her impending relocation back to Brazil. You know, help packing and what not, to move back to her native land.............

She was rather surprised as she is not moving to back to Brazil. We, are however, travelling to Brazil as a family for a bit to visit her family.

I can only imagine what the rumor is.......................

Something along the lines of ..... "I am cheating so she is taking the kids and headed back to Brazil"

To be fair, I'd heard you were going to Brazil because you were too lazy to live the Gospel and wanted to dwell amongst the indolent slothful Lamanites.

I think you're being too paranoid.

Small communities are always full of gossip. It's obvious the rumors are flying around about you but for your own health and well being it's best if you can learn to blow it off. Just laugh and move on with your day.

Look, everyone knows that the only reason people leave the church is because:

a. Have sinned
b. want to sin
c. have been offended by someone who knew they sinned
d. have been offended by someone who knew they wanted to sin
e. are too lazy to be good saints (probably because they spend all their energy sinning or thinking about sin)
f. sin

Ah, the ward rumor mill. I remember it well. To be fair, there were plenty of good folk in my ward who weren't gossip mongers. But the worst offenders were usually part of the Bishop's own family, which made it especially disturbing.

Anyway, back in my day the typical worst case scenario for why a young girl was no longer attending? She was pregnant! With a black baby!

I think there was probably like one African American male resident of Holladay back in those days, but judging by the gossip he sure must have been busy!

My god. The inactive girl pregnant with a black baby rumor. I'd forgotten that. Misogyny and racism all wrapped up in one Satanic leaving-the-church-and-damned-forever package.

LOL!

I think this rumor was one of the reasons that, when I went to High School during the late 70's/early 80's, every other Church activity was some sort of Standards Night. I swear, I learned almost as much about sex from these lectures as I did in sex ed class!

"Is it true? So sad, you moving back to Brazil" - First thing out of ward members mouth to my wife today, on encountering her at my son's school.
Followed by
"And <my name> what is he going to do?"

The "oh, we are all just going for a family vacation" is met with an awkward pause and a quick change of tone.

"ALL OF US AS A FAMILY, you know, to visit my family........."

The wheels that mus be a turning and the lips a flapping.

You can't just leave the church because you decide it is a crock........
