When I was 15 years old, my dad was suddenly released from his calling as 1st counselor in the bishopric after about 18 months of service. At the time, I felt a little ashamed. I had friends with dads that served in even higher up positions for the "full term."
I refuse to complain about the church hierarchy or priesthood authority. I would like to discuss my teenage evaluation of religious authority and the concequence of living within an area of high Mormon concentrations.
Was I part of a small minority who might succumb to shame in similar situations? Is a teenage resident of Utah more likely to feel the way I did than peers living outside the state? Would I have felt the same way if my dad was released from a secular volunteer calling? Would I have felt the same if he was laid off?
And most importantly, how might the church prevent their young kids from feeling ashamed about their dads not climbing the Mormon ladder as fast as other dads?
I have my opinions about these questions but I'm curious to hear yours.
Thank you!
Zee.

Priesthood leadership and social status
Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

I doubt that Church Leaders feel this is an issue. After all, they had to work hard to get where they are, why should they and their families not feel proud of their accomplishments?
In fact, I would think the Church would encourage this kind of thinking. It adds a bit of competition and incentive to the otherwise boring and fruitless paying, praying, and obeying upon which the LDS Church is utterly dependent.

Well-the GA's are so arrogant they can piss off even TBM TBM families. Take the story of by DIL who comes from a wealthy line of hard core ,truly obedient , never question anything Mormons with line going through the melvin ballard apostleship. So DIL's grandfather was a much loved, hard working stake president in one of the tony neighborhoods of slc. This guy served faithfully without whining for over 15 years. Truly a sainted stake president who gave tons of hours to the cause, loved is charges and followed orders.
without warning bear boyd k appeared unannounced at a stake conference and released brother xxx without 1 single word of appreciation, nary a word. this was not a release for cause but one to show the arrogant power of an asshole apostle.
even though he tried not to show it, the released sp was devasted totally , his family totally pissed off and they have not recovered to this day! and socially their were of course hints of sin which made them like lepers in their priesthood circle.
i only know about it because tbm DIL still talks about how her grandpa was dissed by the bear-and of course their is no recourse whatsoever!
just sayin

Either you have an intriguing family, or a way with the anecdote. This is the second interesting glimpse of your extended family you have provided that could only occur under Mormonism.
You should start keeping a journal and writing some of this stuff up. Could be of great (cautionary) value to your progeny.

i probably should keep a journal abt these strange happenings in my my wife side of the family.
i wont go into it but her dad an honest real estate agent/broker in logan lost his faith mostly when he was working to close a deal to get a k-mart in logan and was so screwed out of the deal by other Mormon business men who were really dishonest to the core. my FIL just went through the LDS motions for the last 20 years of his life- he lost his faith because hypocrite Mormons (bishops and sp all) were dishonest. happy valley logan is full of stories like that!
