Interesting. To bad that it does not help the Mormon Church with their DNA problem. In fact, it makes it worse. It shows that a mutation by a single individual inserted into the Amerind gene pool six hundred years ago can be readily detected in present day progeny.

This certainly does not support the Mopologist claim that "dilution of the genetic contribution from a small group of Lehites" caused their genetic contribution to be undetectable today.

What the DNA deniers don't seem to understand is that the insertion of new mutations into a different gene pool can be fairly accurately timed. We can see DNA inserted by Neanderthals some 30,000 years ago for goodness sake. This particular insertion was post-Columbian.

Again, for those who may have missed it, high resolution mtDNA analysis of several thousand samples by two well regarded US groups, and dozens of other published studies since about 1990, have all been consistent with the hypothesis that here were six founder clades for the pre-Columbian New World genome, and they all came over from Siberia via Beringia starting some 15,000 to 20,000 years ago with the last arriving some 12,000 years ago.

This was a slow, but more or less continuous, single migration. There is no evidence whatsoever for any transoceanic contribution to the pre-Columbian New World genome anywhere near any "Book of Mormon" land, be it LGT or heartland - Nibley or Meldrum. It is all wishful thinking.

Anyway, a URL for one of these papers and the summary quote from the lead author is shown below.
"Here we show, by using 86 complete mitochondrial genomes, that all Native American haplogroups, including haplogroup X, were part of a single founding population, thereby refuting multiple-migration models.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2427228/?tool=pmcentrez

What is it about no transoceanic contribution to the the pre-Columbian New World genome is it that is so hard to understand?

Well, chalk up another point for Team Meldrum.

Holy cow. Expand the comment thread on that article, and suddenly you're treated to a cornucopia of anti-Semitic comments, most of which have been upvoted 10-20 times. I knew anti-Semitism was supposed to be on the rise again in Europe, but this is ridiculous.

My favorite comment on the article:

Wow, imagine that. A gene that determines what religion you will have. And these guys have a "Jew gene" you say? Incredible!

This isn't too far of a stone's throw from Nazi propaganda during the 1930s.

In Hungary, there is no antisemitism. We have only a strong claim to it...

The group of scientists, led my Eitan Friedman, noted, however, that Colorado’s Mexican Indians do not seem to have any traditions that would link them to Jews.

These are the listed research efforts of Dr. Eitan Friedman of City University of New York:

•Transmembrane signaling via G protein-coupled receptors and plasticity of these receptors in health and disease.
•Role of MAP kinases in GPCR signaling.
•Role of altered cellular signal transduction in the etiology of bipolar illness and in the mechanism of action of mood stabilizers.
•Characterization of a novel brain dopamine receptor that couples to phospholipase C.
•Molecular mechanisms involved in mediating the morphological and behavioral effects of in utero exposure to cocaine.

His published research in no way matches the claim that he lead this group.

If one was seeking traditions linking Colorado's Mexican Indians to Jews, it would be worthwhile to note their consumption of thinly sliced smoked salmon. Navajo tacos do not count.

Computer (Googled) analysis of genetic data (possible historic events) has revealed that the two groups should have a common ancestor – a Jewish person who moved from Europe to the New World as long as 600 years ago. (to consider previous would be scientific heresy) It was the time when Christopher Columbus discovered America, (Duh!) and the Jewish population was expelled from Spain.(Cause everyone knows that no one came to America before Columbus!)
