Well clearly the people in the BSA leadership don't know who is really in charge. Don't worry a couple phone calls from the COB and all talk about changing policies will be put to rest.

I wonder if the church still intends to jettison the scout program if gay leaders are allowed.
Maybe one day the BSA will let atheists join too...

They already do in every state.

“While we’ll carefully consider this resolution, there are no plans to change this policy,” Smith said, noting that resolutions and petitions on the matter were “not unique” and dated back to 2000, when the Supreme Court heard a challenge on their stance. (The justices sided with the Boy Scouts in the lawsuit involving a former Assistant Scoutmaster who was gay, citing the protections of the First Amendment).

Just a polite way of saying no.

I have a feeling the Church would support this move. After all, isn't the BSA policy now more strict than the Church's own policy?

If a 13-year old member calls a meeting with his bishop and announces that he is gay, the bishop will tell him to keep living the law of chastity just like anybody else. If he makes the same announcement to his scout master, the scout master is obligated to kick the kid out of scouts.

Depends on the bishop

When I was still active and had a calling in the YM, I remember the church gearing up to roll out a revamped Duty to God program. It appeared to be intended as a complete replacement to the Scouting program, rather than the religious component it is now, so that the church could part ways with BSA if they felt the need.

This would have been back in 2004 or so, I believe. I don't remember what was going on with the BSA back then that made the church suspect that they might make a change they could not support. I agree with Analytics that the church seems like it would be more accommodating now, and would probably evolve along with the BSA rather than sever ties.

You know, I think this time the Boy Scouts are going to finally come around and accept gays into the organization. My gut tells me this will be the outcome and it's just a matter of making progress and moving forward. The LDS church will have to decide what it will do. I have no idea what the church will do. Frankly, I don't care. The Mormon church has an image problem and that image problem is going to keep getting worse.

I think it is a good idea to allow each troop to decide.

As for the Church and Boy Scouts; "morally straight" the Church stance is that all are held to the same Chastity standards, there is not grounds for the Church or Boy Scouts to exclude someone who is attracted to members of the same gender if that person has not committed a homosexual act.
