Suggested reading for Dan's next Hit Piece

Post by _Kevin Graham »

Let's contrast Dan Peterson's hit piece and influence from his new Danite friend, with a talk just two months ago in Conference:

This topic of judging others could actually be taught in a two-word sermon. When it comes to hating, gossiping, ignoring, ridiculing, holding grudges, or wanting to cause harm, please apply the following:

Stop it!

It’s that simple. We simply have to stop judging others and replace judgmental thoughts and feelings with a heart full of love for God and His children. God is our Father. We are His children. We are all brothers and sisters. I don’t know exactly how to articulate this point of not judging others with sufficient eloquence, passion, and persuasion to make it stick. I can quote scripture, I can try to expound doctrine, and I will even quote a bumper sticker I recently saw. It was attached to the back of a car whose driver appeared to be a little rough around the edges, but the words on the sticker taught an insightful lesson. It read, “Don’t judge me because I sin differently than you.”

Jesus said it is easy to love those who love us; even the wicked can do that. But Jesus Christ taught a higher law. His words echo through the centuries and are meant for us today. They are meant for all who desire to be His disciples. They are meant for you and me: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”

Maybe Dan was sleeping through this talk.

There is also this recent Ensign article:

I pondered the Savior’s counsel to the Nephites:

“For, if ye forgive men their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you;

“But if ye forgive not men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (3 Nephi 13:14–15).

I also read and reread the passage that says, “I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men” (D&C 64:10).

I could not overlook the stark command of these words. How could I call myself a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints if I failed to forgive this person?

Of course Dan is familiar with these teachings already, but for some reason or another, has chosen to ignore them in preference to his weird interpretation of some scriptures that were no doubt used by the Danites to justify their actions.

The term "loan-shifting" or "semantic extension" refers to a change in the meaning of an established native word in order to extend the number of things to which it applies. Loan-shifting has occurred throughout history.

Why do some critics think it is impossible that the Nephites would have acted any differently when they encountered unfamiliar items or had to identify different items with a limited written vocabulary? Perhaps the reformed Egyptian word for "forgive" was expanded to include other verbs that were in some way emotion-like. The most likely emotions to have been included in the expanded definition of the Book of Mormon "forgive" are carrying a grudge and coddling a martyr complex.

One wonders why the Deseret News is allowed to so flagrantly rebel against Uchtdorf's conference advice by publishing Danite Dans Demolition Diatribes month after month....

I was overjoyed to read this talk, and was eager to see how apologists would respond to it. What we have seen come out of the call for Christian civility is perhaps MST, which, I think, is a very good thing.

But the other shenanigans have continued unabated. It is truly puzzling and disappointing.

That's because there are some who think the Brethren are wrong. They think the Brethren were talking to someone else, not them. And as long as they aren't feeling the long arm of the Brethren, and nothing happens to them, they will continue as currently constituted.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I also think there are some that feel they are more deserving to be Bretheren than the current incumbents.

I would think that it is more the latter than the former. Many probably think that the counsel only applies to critics on MDB and the like.
