Will Schryver's Story About Why His Book of Abraham Paper was Quashed

Mr. Schryver appears to have come forward with his version of why it was his groundbreaking paper on the Book of Abraham was not published, and lays the blame squarely at the feet of . . . Gerald Bradford.

I am presently preparing a blog post that details those events, as well as others from a year previous, when an attempt was made to prevent me from speaking at the 2010 FAIR conference. That led directly to the later suppression of the scroll-length article.

Incidentally, the scroll-length paper consisted primarily of calculations based on the first substantial set of forensic measurements ever made of any ancient Egyptian scroll, insofar as Professor Gee has been able to determine. The measurements of the thickness of the papyri were conducted employing a novel methodology, by a PhD expert in a relevant field, as Professor Gee assisted and I recorded the measurements. It also would have contained some of the first really high quality images of the papyri to be published. The paper had been reviewed and approved for publication by the Church Historian.*

Jerry Bradford, to my knowledge, knew all these things. And yet, because he had apparently been influenced by some to believe that the article was apologetic nonsense, he demanded that its publication be halted, and used a ridiculous smear piece prepared and/or promulgated by the same group of apostates (and their sympathizers) who have most recently been the recipients of the emails leaked from the Maxwell Institute.

It's a long and winding tale, and I hope to publish it to my blog within the next two or three days.

* = This should not be misinterpreted as suggesting that the Church Historian's office endorsed the contents of the article. But its approval was required, by contract, on account of my extensive use of high-resolution scan images from the Joseph Smith papryi.

And bears crap in the woods.

But what is more interesting to me is the pattern that is emerging--it is Gerald Bradford's willingness to listen to apostates bearing gifts that resulted in the refusal to publish Schryver's paper, as well as the refusal to publish Greg Smith's paper; and perhaps, to some degree, the cashiering of Professor Peterson.

Is this a part of the otherwise mysterious hoops of steel binding Will Schryver to Professor Peterson?

The world is being turned upside-down; the apostate tail is wagging the Mormon dog; and otherwise good and virtuous scholarship is being censored.

And instead of manning the battlements, Gerald Bradford stands idly by and twists the ends of his long and waxed mustachios.

All the Best!

In all fairness, he does not let the contributions of a group of apostates, with their ridiculous smear quotations, go unheralded.

All hail Ms. Jack and her "ridiculous smear quotations."

Ummm.. it IS apologetic nonsense. It can't be anything else, since the papyri is what is it... and isn't what it isn't.

Last I heard, MI wasn't required to print apologetic nonsense. And Dan must have agreed with Mr Bradford, since at that time, Dan was still in charge of the Review.

Bradford is a convenient scapegoat. That William hates him speaks highly of the man.

Whatever William is about to write, here are the facts:

  • I've never been Mormon, so it's impossible for me to be a "Mormon apostate" in any sense of the term.
  • I don't sympathize with "Mormon apostates" any more than I sympathize with other kinds of Mormons. If anything, my sympathies for so-called "TBMs" are the strongest (hello, married to one).
  • Nobody put me up to the misogyny thread. It was prepared entirely by me, with just one other member of MDB submitting a few of the quotes for a single section of the thread. Hardly a group effort.
  • I have never been the recipient of leaked e-mails from the Maxwell Institute. On the contrary, two different Mormon apologists who have written for the Maxwell Institute---Dan Peterson and Russell C. McGregor---have posted private correspondence from me onto message boards without my permission.

Here's hoping everyone keeps that in mind as they read whatever fiction William is about to post.

WOW.

That is the biggest pile of horse puckey I have read in a long time.

The ever-evolving tale of Will Schryver's amazing pseudo-scholarly shell game, in which cipher papers become scroll-length-calculation papers, there are conspiracies involving a changing cast of actors, sometimes including CES and BYU employees, maybe even GAs, and now the convenient target du jour of M. Gerald Bradford, apologies about things later denied only to be turned into the devious actions of malevolent mods....

One can hardly keep track of it all. But, as always, it is a year's supply of fertilizer for the farm.

ETA: Oh, and I forgot that in Willy's Magical Wonderland, Evangelical graduate students friendly to Mormonism are turned into Mormon apostates.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Will blamed Brian Hauglid (and possibly David Bokovoy) for killing his Book of Abraham stuff.
