Book Recommendations

Post by _Stormy Waters »

Hello everyone,
I am looking for some books to add to my reading list. I'm currently reading In Sacred Lonliness. I would be interested to know what the posters here think are the best books on Mormonism/religion? If you are so inclined please post the books that you would recommend.

Jesus the Christ by Talmadge
Restoring the Ancient Church by Bickmore
The Great Divorce and Screwtape Letters by Lewis
Flatland by Abbott (explains why anti Mormons can't understand reality)

We could go deeper, but you'll need time to digest these introductory works.
Machina Sublime
Satan's Plan Deconstructed.
Your Best Resource On Joseph Smith's Polygamy.
Conservatism is the Gospel of Christ and the Plan of Salvation in Action.
The Degeneracy Of Progressivism.

Eternal Man, by Truman Madsen. Very thought provoking, but it may be hard to find.

If you haven't read Under the Banner of Heaven yet, it's a must.

I like Israel Finkelstein's books about biblical archaeology.

David Horowitz' The New Leviathan, just out.

Don't leave home without it.

I'm obviously biased, but pretty much everything from http://www.gregkofford.com/ is worth reading. And for a bonus, most everything is available on ebook.
You're absolutely vile and obnoxious paternalistic air of intellectual superiority towards anyone who takes issue with your clear misapprehension of core LDS doctrine must give one pause. - Droopy

From Jesus to Christianity by L. Michael White

History of the Church is an interesting read, but is several volumes.

Mormonism: Shadow or Reality
One Nation Under Gods

The ORIGINAL PofGP (but you must read side by side with the current edition. Then ask yourself, "Why did God make so many changes to His perfectly translated scriptures?" We're not talking minor typos or grammatical changes either.)

I agree with the narrator, and I'm not employed by Kofford.

If you haven't read them, I recommend Leonard Arrington's biography of Brigham Young ("American Moses") and Tom Alexander's biography of Wilford Woodruff ("Things in Heaven and Earth"). They're both a bit dry at times, but you'll have a much better understanding of "the rest of the story" about polygamy and OD 1.

"Charly" by Jack Weyland

"The Work And The Glory" By Gerald N.Lund

(Two books that reflect Mormon culture.)
Being a Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction -Pope Benedict XVI
