Han Solo vs. Indiana Jones

Post by _zeezrom »

In our household, Indiana Jones movies are off limits but Stars Wars is OK.

My coworker just notified me of a potential conflict within this policy. He reminded me of the many instances of violence in Star Wars (i.e. chopping off of limbs, etc.).

After thinking about it for a while, I realized that the policy stems back to the sexual nature of Indiana Jones movies. Also, the whole Force idea dovetails very nicely into the Holy Ghost/priesthood paradigm.

What do you think? Are the two Harrison Ford movies equally bad influences on children or does the sexual nature of the one tip the scales?

Oops! I forgot about the language. I suppose that is the biggest reason Indiana is not allowed.

What sexual nature!? I'm trying to think of some overt sexuality in the Indie movies, and I can't come up with any.

No child (grandchild) of mine would be prevent from watching an Indiana Jones movie. Of course, that is totally your decision.

This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Zoiks, I wasn't even aware that the Indiana Jones films were particularly sexual in nature. How old are your kids?

Note that I'm posting this stuff only FYI. I'm not saying any of this bothers me...

Raiders:
Suggested MPAA Rating: PG for Intense Sequences of Adventure Action and Violence, scary images, sensuality, and some language (Given the content below, it was obviously released before there was a PG-13)

A silhouette of a woman's body can be seen through a silk dress. Very close to nudity.

The film's villain, watches a woman change into a formal dress. However, he and the audience only see her bare back in the mirror as she takes off her bra.

The two leads have sex (we see them about to in bed, and then the scene ends as they start kissing and writhering). In the morning, after the sex, we can tell the heroine is not wearing any clothing, though she is covered by the blankets.

We see the non-sexual, tribal rear nudity of an Indian tribe.

Temple of Doom:
Indy, in order to save himself, retrieves a vial of antidote from between a woman's breasts inside her dress (played for laughs, nothing shown).

A women is riding from elephant and falls off to water we see her nipples briefly under her wet clothes.

At a dinner table, a man eggs Indy on about a past experience in which an angry sultan threatened to cut off his "misunderstanding" (he looks down at his crotch).

Indy and Willie engage in foreplay in Willie's bedroom, with Willie promising that she sleeps with "nothing" on, Indy saying he scientifically studies "mating customs" and "primitive sexual practices" and saying he has "years of fieldwork" in the area.

Indy and Willie kiss.

Willie promises Indy that he'll "never have better" than her and suggestively arches her back; Indy says he'll tell her in the morning (but she gets angry and they don't have sex).

Willie asks Indy to be "gentle" with her as he dives onto her bed (he's actually looking for a secret passageway).

Indy discovers the secret passageway by pushing on the breasts of a female statue. Willie expresses annoyance, saying "I'm right here" and grabbing her chest.

In order to follow Indy, Willie pushes on a similar statue in the same place. She expresses disgust at doing so.

Willie wears a sacrificial dress that reveals bare stomach and some cleavage.

This is the most mature of the Indiana Jones films in every way, with lots of sexual dialogue. However, this is also one of the only movies in the series where actual sex isn't implied. Then again the subtle implications in Raiders and Crusade are harder for young viewers to pick up on than the somewhat direct dialogue in this film.

Last Crusade:
Suggested MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for Sequences of Intense Adventure/Action Violence including some scary images, sexuality, and language

It is implied that both Indy and his father have sex with Elsa (at different times).

We see Indy and Elsa engage in foreplay, ending with them laying on the floor, in bathrobes, passionately kissing.

Indiana Jones is tied up to a chair and Elsa kisses him passionately.

On the other hand, Leia is wearing a metal bikini playing bondage games with Jabba the Hutt.

Leia is also tortured off-screen in Star Wars. Han is tortured on-screen in The Empire Strikes Back. A couple of droids are tortured in Return of the Jedi.

Is torture okay?

Since the issue is sexuality in Indiana Jones vs. Star Wars, pick the least modest action figure:

Little question for ya.

What do LDS fear more in movies:

A. Bad language
B. Sexual content
C. Violence

In what order, would these be rated by LDS on a bad to worse scale?

I'm thinking C, A, then B.
