Eric Jones has been a Boy Scout since he was just nine years old. But this weekend, everything changed when the 19-year-old decided to come out to his scout leaders on Sunday and was promptly stripped of his Eagle Scout honors and asked to leave the organization.
I can see them kicking him out of scouting, since the BSA is still an anti-gay organization, but why strip him of an honor that he earned?

He violated the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.
When did he violate them? As I understand BSA policy, it is basically don't ask don't tell. If he waited until after he earned the Eagle rank to come out, then at no point did he violate the requirements of advancement or BSA policies while he earned it.
Or are you saying, bspace, that any Eagle Scout can be stripped of his rank at any point in his life if he is found to violate the oath, law, or any other requirement?

Ignorance, prejudice, and fear. They walk hand in hand, and explain why the BSA would do this.
Edited: I just read the blog post and watched the video clip. Smells fishy to me. I don't think this kid was stripped of his Eagle for being gay. Relieved of his position and kicked out the Scouts, yes, but the local council can't strip him of his Eagle. Plus, it sounds like he pulled a Nortinski when he came out, secretly recording a meeting for an expose documentary. So, I am withholding judgment about the whole thing until I get more facts.

He sullied the purity of the Boy Scouts and transgressed against the Rules of Blood and Iron which are eternally the same. Not to fret, things can be made better by bringing in Sean Hannity to exorcise those lingering memories the scout troop shared with this scout.
