Is anyone excited for the 10th anniversary of Charly?
I'm in Utah right now and it looks like the movie Charly is back in theaters for an encore presentation. I remember when that came out. I never saw it, but I know a lot of people in the ward owned it on DVD. I thought it was a straight to DVD movie. Was it a theatrical release in Utah? I was thinking it must have been a big hit to get a 10th anniversary encore release. According to imdb.com it grossed $814,666 and had a budget of $950,000. They must be re-releasing it to try to recoup their loss.

I think they've already spent more on advertising then they'll make back.

Any views on this, Eric?

Re: Is anyone excited for the 10th anniversary of Charly?
I was subjected to the stage play of Charly when I was a little boy. The play is a musical; I have no intention of finding out whether the movie is, too. Anyway, it's a really depressing story about this nice TBM boy and girl who date and fall in love and get married in the temple, and then she gets a terminal disease and dies. And in the play I saw, it showed them getting sealed in the temple, except it was only the two actors on stage kneeling at an altar, and wearing white, but not temple clothes. And they sang some song about how wonderful love is or some b.s. like that. Also, when they were dating, there was a miniature Ferris wheel on the stage that the two main characters rode on with their backs to the audience. Then to symbolize when Charly died, the two actors were back on the Ferris wheel in another scene, then she got off but he kept riding.
Extremely depressing symbolism that was evidently intended to give us hope about the principle of eternal marriage. Geez, even when I was a kid who believed in eternal marriage it depressed the hell out of me.
On a side note about Mormon cinema, about a year ago I actually bought The Book of Mormon Movie on DVD and was going to review it on the board, but I couldn't get past the first half hour. The production crew apparently saw themselves as reverently making a religious epic along the lines of The Ten Commandments. The reality is a low budget B movie based on a combination of Arnold Friberg's paintings and the actual Book of Mormon, and like his paintings and his source material, the persons in the movie are uninteresting two-dimensional caricatures. And it's not awful enough to be unintentionally hilarious. It's just plain unwatchable.

Wait. The film was made in 2002? Then what is up with the "Facebook" updates in the trailer?

I love that film and the book (Flowers for Algernon) it was based on. I remember when the LDS novel, Charly came out I did a slow burn over that title...
But seriously, back to my question. Have they actually inserted Facebook into the new trailer to make it seem more ... whatever?
Has the cheese had even more Velveeta poured on it?

I had never heard of the LDS novel Charly until someone mentioned the book to me. She told me what a great book Charly was. I assumed she was talking about Flowers for Algernon. I quickly realized we were talking about different books. I've never read the LDS Charly or seen the movie.

I've never seen the film, but if it is from 2002, then the Facebook updates would have to be added later. Got to keep it hip so the teens will watch it, after all ;)
