Future Temple At Adam-ondi-Ahman

Another thread on here regarding Zion made me think about the temple site the church owns in Missouri for a future temple.

I have to admit I'm a bit hazy on details as to what the church "officially" teaches regarding where Zion will be located in Missouri.

Is it going to be located around this temple site? Is this where the saints will be told to gather when the time comes?

http://www.ldschurchtemples.com/adamondiahman/

It states:
Adam-ondi-Ahman is the site of a future grand council where Jesus Christ will meet with His stewards of all dispensations and receive back the keys of the kingdom in preparation for His Second Coming. Only those called to the meeting will know of its occurrence.

Here is the entire content (minus the quote above):
Adam-ondi-Ahman Temple

Site dedicated but temple not constructed

Location: Spring Hill, Missouri, United States.

Site Dedication: October 1838 by Brigham Young

Temple Locale

The beautiful site of Adam-ondi-Ahman lies at a bend in the Grand River in northern Missouri, about 70 miles north of Kansas City. On the highest elevation of Spring Hill, 124 feet above Grand River, a temple block was dedicated. No cornerstones were laid or temple constructed, however, as just days later, the Saints were ordered to leave the settlement. The Church has since acquired the site and much of the surrounding area, which is leased to local farmers.

Temple Facts

The Adam-ondi-Ahman Temple was the third temple planned but never constructed by the early Saints in Missouri.

The name Adam-ondi-Ahman is an English rendition of a phrase from the pure Adamic language, which could possibly mean "Adam in the presence of God."

The valley of Adam-ondi-Ahman was revealed to Joseph Smith to be the place where Adam blessed his posterity after being driven from the Garden of Eden.

The first settlers of Adam-ondi-Ahman arrived in February 1838. By November 1838, the Saints had been delivered an ultimatum to leave Daviess County within 10 days.

On June 11, 1838, Joseph Smith gave Spring Hill the name of Adam-ondi-Ahman.

Some evidence suggests that a public square—not a temple block—was dedicated in October 1838 at Adam-ondi-Ahman.

City of Seth

On Saturday, September 1, 1838, the First Presidency made its way from Far West toward Littlefield's halfway house—about halfway between Adam-ondi-Aham and Far West—for the purpose of appointing a city of Zion. It was named the City of Seth in honor of Adam's son. The center of this city, which could have been the site of a public square and future temple, was never established due to the expulsion of the Saints from Missouri shortly after the city was appointed.

The gathering of Zion is another one of those areas of Church belief that has been redefined from what Joseph Smith and BY taught. Gathering now days has been reduced to converting.

I wonder when the last time there was an official pronouncement from the Church (General Conf talk - Church magazine sort of thing) that even mention gathering to Missouri in the near future?

So....do you think most members don't even know about this future temple site?

How many members do you think even know about the "future grand council where Jesus Christ will meet with His stewards of all dispensations and receive back the keys of the kingdom in preparation for His Second Coming"? Is this still discussed at all?

I almost find it odd that the church still has this information on their temple website.

Many Mormons suffer from too-soon-itis. None of this stuff will happen till the Millenium and there is no reason for the Church to buy and own this land (and maintain it). Sell it and do some good with the money.

I think the Adam-ondi-Ahman/Garden of Eden myth is fading out of LDS theology. I'm curious as to what purpose a temple would serve in that area considering its population.

I've not heard it actually talked about in church in quite some time.

That the whackjob stuff about the Grand Council and the Adamic language is there is a dead giveaway that the site is not an official LDS site. The Church is all about playing down the crazier stuff nowadays.

I think most long term members are probably aware of both the temple site and the prediction about Jesus. That sort of thing tends to be brought up in Sunday School over and over again along with any other LDS dooms day prediction similar to the White Horse prophecy. Strangely enough things like Zelph the White Nephite don't seem to get much play.

This is one of those subjects Mitt Romney is embarrassed about, which is why he prevaricated with George Stephanopoulos in 2007:
Stephanopoulos: I just have one more question about this and it has to do with the Muslim world. In your faith, if I understand it correctly, it teaches that Jesus will return probably to the United States and reign on earth for 1,000 years. And I wonder how that would be viewed in the Muslim world. Have you thought about how the Muslim world will react to that and whether it would make it more difficult, if you were president, to build alliances with the Muslim world?

Mitt Romney: Well, I'm not a spokesman for my church. I'm not running for pastor in chief. I'm running for commander in chief. So the best place to go for my church's doctrines would be my church.

Stephanopoulos: But I'm talking about how they will take it, how they will perceive it.

Mitt Romney: I understand, but that doesn't happen to be a doctrine of my church. Our belief is just as it says in the Bible, that the messiah will come to Jerusalem, stand on the Mount of Olives and that the Mount of Olives will be the place for the great gathering and so forth. It's the same as the other Christian tradition. But that being said, how do Muslims feel about Christian doctrines? They don't agree with them. There are differences between doctrines of churches. But the values at the core of the Christian faith, the Jewish faith and many other religions are very, very similar and it's that common basis that we have to support and find ability to draw people to rather than to point out the differences between our faiths. The differences are less pronounced than the common base that can lead to the peace and the acceptability and the brother and sisterhood of humankind.

Again, this is Millenium stuff. When the New Jerusalem is on this continent and Christ returns, there will be a temple built there. Right now it has no relevance to anything and is precisely why the Church has no business owning the land or doing anything there.

The Police Chief of the town where I grew up in the 60's had a large collection of bicycles in preparation of the event that they may be needed for his family and friends to ride back to Missouri on. True story! LOL!
