"Writing or reporting about Mormons from a desk and a keyboard without a field trip to a Mormon ward is like covering Congress from Kalamazoo," Otterson writes. "You have to be there. You have to feel the pulse. You have to understand the perspectives, the nuances, the motivation deeply rooted in belief. Then you'll be better able to explain what makes Mormons tick so enthusiastically."

If I was thinking of buying a Chevy, the first place I would go would be the Ford dealer.

Or how about Consumer Reports, National Highway Safety Administration, Insurance Institute for Safety, etc. You know, non-biased evaluators of cars.

Maybe we could get a Consumer Reports for religion.

If I wanted to learn about Scientology, I wonder if they would agree that the best source for accurate information is the Scientologists?

We already have that. Read the atheists. Sam Harris is particularly poignant on religion, as John W. Loftus is! I just finished Loftus "Why I Became an Atheist" and it is blistering powerful against religion. The strongest arguments I have ever read about religions silliness concerning evil in a world that is supposed to be loved by an all powerful and all good God.
