With a large majority of that "Charitable giving" funneled to the LDS church, to then be given as humanitarian aid and sent back out in the world at about 1.5% - 2.0% of what was given to the church in the first place.
So, it seems that the church skims off 98% of what might have been given as real charity to other organizations and keeps it for itself.
And Utah is deemed the most generous state? Generous to the LDS church perhaps.

Yeah, let's see some stats that don't count giving money to a corporate "church" or to an Evangelical snake-oil salesman as "charity" and then we can talk. Let's see what the numbers are for giving to real charities--the ones that help kids with cancer, and provide after-school programs for disadvantaged youth, and help provide mosquito nets to third-world countries, etc. Contributions to the LDS humanitarian fund (that are actually used for humanitarian purposes like disaster relief) and fast offerings can count. But no tithing.

Most generous state! So that is why Utah decided to not fund the 10% federal match so the poorest of the elderly could receive dental, vision and hearing aid care. Apparently they are just too generous.
Sorry, in my rush to judgment, I was thinking this statement on generosity was some form of double speak.

I agree, for instance the Church donated $5 billion for a commercial venture that it isn't expecting a financial return on. They did it just to pretty up a bit of the City.

I find it ironic that the most "generous" state also rates highest in bankruptcy and depression.

If it's the article I read, it said the Northeastern states are all low on the list. But when you take religious donations out, the Northeastern states jump into the Top 10. I'm not sure where Utah ranks when you take religious donations out of the mix.
