Marriott says his garments "saved [his] life" (Wash Post)

Post by _mms »

At church Sunday, Marriott talked about the church’s efforts over the years to explain its mission to Americans who don’t understand the faith.

He recounted serving on a committee based in Salt Lake City with Romney’s father, George Romney, and then later being featured in a “60 Minutes” piece on the Mormon Church. During the interview, Marriott said he was asked about the specific undergarments, which he described as a t-shirt and boxer shorts, that Mormons are encouraged to wear. He said he told interviewer Mike Wallace that he wore the garments, and about a time when he caught fire in a boating accident. His polyester pants burned, though his undershorts were untouched.

Marriott said he told Wallace: “These holy undergarments saved my life.”

These holy undergarments destroyed my life.

I had a wife I loved. Who I love. Who I am trying to love unchanged.

She was attractive.
She is - no, she was - no, she could be. She wear garments as housedress. When the ring bells, I am who open the door. She is unable to do it. Her housedress doesn't fit to our culture.

When we are on holiday, she wears bathing suit.
Not because we are on bath. It is ENABLED for bathing... Mormon Jesus should be gagged.

my mother fell down some stairs once and claims that the glass that smashed should have cut her, so she believes she was protected by them. its a placebo effect, and just shows how deep some peoples convictions / beliefs run.

Here's a Joke: crucifixes scare away vampires... it works I tell you, I have worn one all my life and vampires have never tried to bite me. (Same mentality)

My wife hated them so much she cried every day for weeks after going through the temple, she was even told they must be worn next to the skin, under the bra!

We also adopted the term passion killers, as they are a deterant from fornication and even kill the mood between husband and wife.

Sex and swimming are the only times you are permitted to take them off. sunbathing used to be permitted but now they have been told that you should never wear anything in public that you wouldn't be ashamed to meet the saviour wearing.

Apparently fig leaves are not acceptable apparel any more.

I'm guessing this young lady either forgot to per hers on or bought the weaker, less protective, cheaper range...

LISBON, N.Y. — Vanessa Bentley, a 22-year-old missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Tucson, Ariz., was killed Tuesday in a two-car collision on state Route 37 in the town of Lisbon in upstate New York.

My wife wore her Gs under her bra. She said that that's what she was told to do in the temple when she went through. I have no idea what doctrinal basis there is for that. It seems to be one of those things that some overzealous member made up and passed on to others, that eventually became the tradition. Just like my dad told me that when he went through the temple he was instructed to be sure the string attaching the baker's hat to the robe was tucked behind his ear. Why did the string have to be behind the ear, instead of in front of or to the side of it? No clue. Because some old dude told my dad to do it when he went through 50+ years ago. I myself would sweep that string behind my ear every time I put on the hat, just because of what my dad had said.

As far as the garments were concerned, it annoyed me that they were fetishized to the point where I had missionaries in the MTC get on my case if they hit the floor (such as while doing laundry), or if I just crammed them into my drawer, rather than lovingly folding them.

I once sewed the symbols into a normal white t-shirt I had from the Army (for under the dress uniform). I figured it would go to waste if I didn't, since I wasn't going to ever wear that tshirt in addition to normal garments. I mentioned this to another LDS and they got all concerned and informed me that the church forbade members from sewing their own garments, or adding the symbols to normal undies. I figured the garment should would "work" anyway and kept wearing it.

I note that now the church has a policy where military members can submit their own colored uniform t-shirts and the church will sew the symbols on for them.

It was once explained to me that garments protect a person from committing adultery or fornication, because to do these the person would have to undress, and the act of removing the garment would make it painfully clear to them what they were doing and shame them. I never put that to the test, but I have the feeling that people who really wanted to do it probably wouldn't be stopped by their Gs. Can anyone confirm or deny this one?
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

For you naysayers, just think how seldom, faithful LDS are struck by meteors or other space debris while wearing their garments.

Better safe than sorry. If garments truly protect the body from physical harm, I would want my wife'e boobs protected. I would hate for her to have her legs, arms, head, and boobs burned off in a fire.

Waiting for maklelan to jump in the thread and assure us all that Marriott isn't truly a "mainstream" Mormon, but rather a member of the "socio-religious faction that many people on this board have found to be rhetorically and personally useful and so have declared to be the mainstream."

Where you at, mak?

It happens. A couple of years ago, this really pious and holier-than-thou Counselor in our Bishophric got busted banging the Primary Pres. who was half his age. I assume that they were wearing garments at some point. It turns out they were hooking up on a regular basis in some motel during his lunch hour and when her kids were in school. Never in a million years would I have pictured that dude cheating on his wife. It was quite the scandal. It still blows my mind as she was young and attractive and he was just the opposite. They both got exed. I don't really know much beyond that since I was inactive when it went down and I no longer live in the Stake boundaries anymore.

I always wondered if he had to sit in on any disciplinary courts and dish out punishment to other people in his Ward for sexual indiscretions. What a hypocrite.
Tapirs... Yeah... That's the ticket!
