DCP Ordered to Vacate MI's Offices

Daniel Peterson was ordered by the Maxwell Institute to vacate his office at the Institute (
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/danpeterson/2012/09/the-most-unkindest-cut-of-all.html). It's not clear from the post whether or not Dan is still the editor-in-chief of METI or whether or not METI will still remain part of the Maxwell Institute.

Thus, to me, perhaps the lowest, least justifiable, and most insulting blow of the whole episode came when I was informed that I must vacate my office at the Institute.
Proof, if proof were needed, that what goes around...comes around.
Dan, if you're watching, take the hint and change the way you treat people.

If DCP is still editor-in-chief of METI, it seems he will be working 'virtual'.

These are the walking papers posted prominently on the homepage of MI:
A New Beginning for the Mormon Studies Review
The Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship is continually striving to align its work with the academy’s highest objectives and standards, as befits an organized research unit at Brigham Young University. Our areas of endeavor include the study of LDS scripture and other religious texts and related fields of religious scholarship, including the burgeoning field of Mormon studies.
To better serve these goals, last year we renamed our venerable FARMS Review as the Mormon Studies Review. For many years the FARMS Review has filled an important niche in the intellectual life of its many readers under the vigorous editorship of Professor Daniel C. Peterson and his associates, Louis C. Midgley, George L. Mitton, and, more recently, Gregory L. Smith and Robert White.
We thank these colleagues and the many contributing writers to the Review for their industry and scholarship over the past twenty-three years.
We are proud of the accomplishments of the FARMS Review and are pleased to make its past issues freely available on our website.
But to better position the new Mormon Studies Review within its academic discipline, we are assembling a board of scholars in this field to advise us and will appoint a new editorial team. We regret that we must suspend publication during this period of reorganization and reorientation, but we are certain that our current—and many new—readers will find the new Mormon Studies Review a valuable scholarly resource for the discipline.
We have not yet set a launch date for the new Review, but we will be posting further developments on our website.

Like the ancient Egyptians, this history will be modified to suit the needs of the new leaders.

And look who took the high road.Bill Hamblin wrote:September 17, 2012 at 12:26 pm
Do you really want an office where you have to see Jerry Bradford every day? Really?!
Still waiting for them all to join in a prayer circle at the Provo Temple.

Bill Hamblin and Daniel Peterson should be both personally and professionally embarrassed by their actions, but they are not.
They have both trampled the temple gates on their way out and they have torched the fields after leaving the FARM. Their actions speak volumes about the type of people they are.
I would like to issue a public apology on their behalf for their poor choice of actions that reflect so badly on the Church.
The vast majority of LDS would have handled this same situation in a much more mature and professional manner. Everyone gets fired at some point in their life, how one handles it reflects the type of person they are.

It appears to me that DCP believes that his "firing" just provides fodder for his critics, especially the the malevolent ones. Thus, anything that plays into the critics' hands must be a deliberate humiliation on the part of Dr. Bradford and company.
Maybe I should add another prerequisite for mopologists besides lack of self-awareness and introspection: extreme narcissism. People get fired all the time, but most adults don't have a public hissy fit about it.

What's funny about this is that at Dan's home department--The Dept. of Asian and Near Eastern Languages--Adjunct Faculty are forced to share offices, and yet here he is complaining that he isn't allowed to keep two offices all to himself! I remember several years back, when Jeffrey Nielsen was stirring up controversy after he published a letter declaring certain differences he had with Church policy. Some of the articles referred to him as a "professor" at BYU, and Dan made sure to show up and dismiss Neilsen as "just an adjunct" (or something like that). What this suggests is a pattern of treating people like second-class citizens, and it's really pretty disgusting, imvho. I hope his old MI office gets put to good use. Certainly, I expect that the new occupant won't be giggling over L-Skinny gossip, or plotting 100-page hit pieces, in the newly vacated space. It's sort of akin to when environmentalists go in to clean up so-called "brownfields." What was once a toxic dump gets renovated into a beautiful and productive green space.

I like the unexplained picture of Machiavelli at the top.
Really, he shouldn’t be posting this kind of stuff on his Patheos blog. Who in their right mind would air their personal business like this? I don’t know how anyone could ever doubt Dan being a prima-donna.

Yeah, I know--I super-subtle, right? Speaking of which, did you see his post the other day, where he was quoting from
Camelot and pretending that he was in the role of King Arthur?
