The worst thing about it is that the church's newspaper is giving them free publicity to poison the church from within. Gerald Bradford isn't on the Deseret News board, is he?

Browsing through the comments, it appears most TBMs agree with BC Space. Apparently nobody believes their church leaders when they claim political neutral.

I have a friend who used to be a columnist at the News. He said that editorial content has to be approved by the board, which includes apostles. You cannot publish opinion pieces without church approval. bcspace will correctly tell us that a column in the paper is not doctrine, but if being a Democrat is so antithetical to the gospel, why would the apostles allow such a piece to run?

Incorrect. Political affiliation is not used to judge membership or temple worthiness. The Church, by which I mean it's doctrine, correctly judges that being a Democrat is the wrong direction on the path.

Wheat with the tares. The primary concern is converts. The Church believes it's own doctrine and exposure to it changes hearts and minds. I agree. The danger is some, Democrats in this case, think this justifies their philosophy. For them, this is a parable and they are not planted in good soil.

So the Deseret News is setting these folks up for a fall?

It's allowing them some freedom of expression. They are setting themselves up for a fall. There is a reason why they don't speak up in Church. It's because they instinctively know they are wrong or are in opposition to the Church.

In other words the church is giving air time to closet apostates under the guise of showing outsiders that everyone is welcome in the church. Seems a bit dishonest to me,but then that's never stopped the church before.

No. Democrats are always welcome in the Church. Their doctrine is not.

That's where the dishonesty comes in. The article asserts that their "doctrine" is compatible with the church's doctrine. If that's not true, then the brethren have approved a lie to be published in their paper.
