Last week, I attended the funeral for a friend. He was raised LDS, did the mission thing, married in the temple, apostatized, TBM wife divorced him, he remarried civilly (by a city mayor), and never went to a Mormon church house in three decades, except to his own parents' funerals.

My friend's brother is currently a Mormon bishop, and the widow relented and allowed my friend's body to be clothed in the temple clothing for burial. As she put it, it doesn't mean anything but it does buy her peace with her now deceased husband's brothers and sisters.

So, my question is why is being buried in temple clothing important? Is it necessary to being saved or making the CK or being exalted as a god?

It merely reemphasizes the controlling role the church has in a person's life. They own you from cradle to grave.

The trend didn't begin until Utah, late 19th century, If I recall correctly. Joseph wasn't buried in them.

It is one of those things that developed and then became tradition.

So either JSJr's failure to be buried in them keeps him from some reward, or it's just cultural and meaningless. Is that it?

By the way, my wife will make sure I'm not so clothed when my remains are cremated.

Maybe some Mormon's believe it really is necessary for the afterlife. People tend to do that kind of thing.

Yep. It's a cultural development that has no spiritual/eternal value.

Perhaps it has to do with the marriage feast wherein one of the attendees was not in the proper attire and there after thrown out.
