Exmormon conference

Post by _luc »

Has anyone ever attended an exmormon conference? Do you think it's worth the time and money?

Don't listen to Ceeboo!

I went to the Saturday session of the 2009 conference. After watching Craig Criddle's presentation "Authorship - Who Really Wrote the Book of Mormon", we were all shocked and a bit scared as a wild man approached Craig after his presentation (our very own Night Lion) and yelled aggressively at him.

Very interesting and I was glad I went.

I've been and I have enjoyed it. Always makes me smile when Friday open mic night and it starts off like, "I was browsing the Internet for my talk when I ended up on the Mormon Curtain...."

I always raise my beer and smile.

I went in 2008 and heard good presentations from Steve Hassan and others. I went principally to meet many of the folks with whom I had been cavorting online for the previous few years. During one of the sessions, I received an email reminding me about a Scout meeting at the church the following evening. It was fun replying to all that I could not make the meeting because I was in SLC at the Ex-Mormon Conference. But I have not returned, mainly because I do not live in Utah and secondarily because I do not really need the same kind of support that I needed back then (in dealing with an exit from the church and with the fall-out with then-spouse, family, and member friends). I have moved on emotionally and now pretty much limit my interactions on Mormonism to this forum, the occasional foray into a Facebook discussion, and the sometime appearance at FLAK. I still find Mormons and Mormonism interesting from an intellectual standpoint, but going to an Ex-Mo Conference doesn't really scratch that particular itch for me nowadays.

I hope it's worth both. I'll be attending for the first time this year. I'll be the one in the corner chasing shots of Jack Daniels with whatever decent beer they offer at the bar. I'm thinking I'll probably take a cab both there and back home.

I've gone before - they are a hoot. I had a great time actually meeting a lot of these people I have been getting to know online. The speakers are far more interesting and entertaining than what you hear in church, that's for sure. Go, you won't regret it.

Thanks, everyone.

Ceeboo, I always love reading what you have to say. :)

I am truly sorry that I missed this.

That's hilarious!!

I think I'll try to go. I'm particularly interested in hearing Grant Palmer.

I've been to a couple, but my interest was always more in meeting up with people I had met online than in the conference itself. I've had a great time in that respect: I've met some of the people I like best in the world.

The speakers have never been as much of a draw for me, but that's just because of my own interests.
