This is a version of Dan Vogel’s paper "Joseph Smith's Family Dynamics" delivered at John Whitmer Historical Association Annual Conference in Kirtland, Ohio, 27 September 1997, and Sunstone Theological Symposium in Salt Lake City, 30 July 1998, and subsequently published in John Whitmer Historical Association Journal 22 (2002): 51-74. It was also incorporated in Dan Vogel, Joseph Smith: The Making of a Prophet (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 2004).
