holding back boys in school for missions - WTF?!?

I was in a discussion with a bunch of NOMs and apostates, and was shocked to discover that a handful of them knew young LDS mothers who had recently held their sons back, starting them in school a year later than normal, because they didn't want them to go off and work, or else go to college, for a year prior to going on a mission.

Apparently these mothers think it's important enough to maintain "hands-on" control of their sons to make sure they go on missions that they literally set back these guys' educations for a whole year over it. That's seriously messed up. Now these kids aren't in school with their natural age cohort, which isn't earth-shaking, but for what? So the kids don't get a taste of freedom prior to their missions? Seriously? This is a level of control and manipulation that I cannot respect at all. Indeed, it's premeditated and IMHO fanatical.

It's called "red shirtting"...screwed up parents holds kids back thinking it will give the kid the advantage, but when everyone red shirts it all evens out, some schools will not allow red shirting.

Why not homeschool the kid too to make sure he only talks to active members?

Usually 'redshirting' is done for other reasons. I hope delaying education to ensure a child serves a mission is not a widespread practice.

One would assume these parents prayed about the decision to hold back their children and received a witness from the Holy Ghost that it was the right one.
Perhaps they are now wondering why the Holy Ghost led them astray...

in my opinion those of us who are oftentimes critical of the church need to ensure what we present is factual. We shouldn't promote claims merely because we want them to be true.
