Why weren't they patterned after the Savior's way of teaching in the first place?

They tried the "give them resources rather than a lesson" approach with the adult curriculum in the early 90s, and it was a terrible failure. The old manuals, If I recall correctly, date from the 70s and are terrible, but the resource approach is a proven failure. I guess prophets don't learn from past experience.

When I was a missionary they converted from the old lessons to the Preach My Gospel format. Since then there has been a change in the tone of many lessons and in their delivery by teachers. There is a focus on principle based teaching, exploration and discussion as the methods of learning rather than the traditional explain, lecture and talk approach.

This quality of teaching is evident among many of the returned missionaries. The example tends to elevate the quality of teaching from those who have not served missions.

The older generation may have difficulty breaking old habits and teaching patterns. I think the newer crop, especially who have served missions, will handle it fine. Presuming more sisters decide to serve missions that will only benefit the youth.

CES teachers, as a sort of standard bearer of the church, are pushing farther away from the simple act of dispensing facts and information. It's more about having the class explore questions together through discussion. It makes the classes delivered by many older people in the family wards much more difficult to handle.
