I got back to my office this afternoon to find a message on my business phone.

It was a female who did not identify herself beyond saying she is with the missionary department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and she is trying to track down the location of my 24-year old daughter. (She mentioned her by name; first, middle and last.)

She also did not leave a phone number to return the call; just said she was sorry she did not catch me in and somebody from the missionary department would try later.

My 24-year old daughter lives in a suburb of Salt Lake City.

I live 800-miles away.

She hasn't lived with me for over ten years.

I have never received a phone call like this before.

I also recently got a voicemail at home from someone claiming to be with the Church looking for current contact information for my 48-year old sister that has been inactive since she was 17. She also did not leave a number to return the call.

Is your daughter active? I can only guess that this has something to do with increased efforts at reactivation.

From what I know anecdotally I believe this is fairly standard procedure. When they are unable to locate a member of record they contact a family member to locate them.

My daughter is not active.

Who do you think would initiate such an investigation?

In other words, who is it who knows she is not active?

Might this be the bishop in her ward or the ward clerk?

Do they then put up a smoke signal to SLC to do a search and destroy?

I have received numerous such phone calls in regards to the whereabouts of my brothers. My mother is an active member and she refuses to cooperate with the calls. I am a semi-active member and I don't give them any information. It is probably well-intentioned, but it feels invasive nonetheless.

I had this happen to me about my younger brother. But they didn't know where he was. I assumed he came up on a list of members that they have lost track of. So I doubt it has anything to do with the bishop or clerk in the ward where she currently resides. She probably has membership records that are "in limbo". Not assigned to any unit. So in order to locate them and forward their records, they go looking for a relative.

Interesting. This makes me think that maybe my random visit from the missionaries yesterday wasn't so random.
