Does anyone have a problem with what Scratch posted? Why is he always given a pass on consistently "hitting below the belt"?

When I made that comment, I wasn't sure whether or not Scratch was Echols. I figured two things:

1. If Scratch IS Echols, this obscure comment will piss him off, and give him a small taste of what Pahoran likely felt when he read Scratch's comment about his divorce.

2. If Scratch IS NOT Echols, then the comment will likely cause Scratch to simply say WTF is she talking about, and the whole situation is no harm, no foul.

Either way, I never came out and said, "Scratch, you are Echols."

I never used Scratch's IP address or any other Moderational tools to make any type of assumption about Scratch's identity.

I did two things. I made an obscure comment that Scratch might take offense to if he were, indeed Jason Echols, which, according to everyone here, he is not.

And, I advised DCP to remove Jason Echols from his Facebook friend list since DCP had no idea who he was, and wasn't sure why he was a listed friend on his Facebook to begin with.

That's all.

If everyone here feels that I should step down as a Mod because of these actions, I accept that. I honestly don't need the continuous BS and s*** storm that has come my way due to this.

But make no mistake. These are the things I have done. Nothing else.

I am sorry to keep on repeating this post, but ...

There is a Universal Rule (number 7) forbidden the publication of any in real life information about registered posters on this board that they have not themselves made public here.

Liz (by her own statement) thought it quite possible that Scratch was Echols. (Personally I think the overall context suggests she not only thought it was possible, but even that it was probable he was.)

She posted in real life information that she thought was possibly that of Scratch, with the object of warning him not to tease her friend Pahoran.

That information, coupled with the fact that Scratch is a male person with LDS connections, made it possible for me or anyone else to home in on Jason Echols via Google with a high degree of probability.

Therefore what Liz posted would have amounted to a more or less complete outing of Scratch online. She has the intelligence to have realized this. She must find it as obvious as I do that being outed is exactly what Scratch does not want to happen, as well as that her behavior was directly contrary to a Universal Rule.

What is more, she claims as her friend someone who hates Scratch more than anyone else online and would love to out him - Daniel Peterson.

If Liz cannot see that the above story might make perfectly reasonable people feel that she has compromised the confidence in her impartiality that is essential to her functioning as a mod, I think that ... well, there must be radical differences in our life experiences that have led to such a difference of view.

I was going to make a post along these lines. Using in real life information as weapons should carry harsher punishments. For some people like me being "outed" would likely create a ****storm in my personal life. It's not a trivial act and it should not carry a trivial punishment. I'm talking months long suspensions at very least.
Pahoran the other day used the first and last name of the person he believed to be Scratch. He should be suspended for doing it. There are some people here who keep using Pahoran's real name. Inspite of the moderation teams efforts to clean it up and the fact that they are knowingly violating the rules. They should be suspended.
I also think we need more mods. I reported a post a couple days ago that went untouched for over 18 hours.

And let me repeat...the information I revealed was information obtained through a public Facebook page of someone who is not currently registered on MDB.

You've got a bad case of Peterson-itis: Resigning a position then claiming it was someone else's fault that you were fired, or in your case, claiming 'everyone' feels you should be de-modded.

I have very strong reasons for not wanting anyone to know who I am, which is why I always try to make my posts self-supporting and self-contained even when it would be polemically helpful to me to make in real life references.

I don't feel at all happy being moderated by someone who was prepared to post in real life information about another poster in order to discourage him from annoying one of her friends. It makes little difference to me whether or not she obtained that information through her moderatorial powers or through her contacts with a group of her declared friends who loathe one poster on this board and would stop at nothing to out him.

And as for the distinction about 'posting as an ordinary board member, not as a mod': give me a break. That kind of metaphysical distinction may work for Mormons, but it cuts no ice with me.

(ETA: I thought LIz had resigned too. In her place, I would have done too. And I would not have wanted to stage a comeback.)

Hi Liz.

First off: not everyone wants to see you "unModded". Several posters have (If I recall correctly) said otherwise, and likely the silent majority do not feel that unModding would be necessary or just.

Secondly: If I may play devil's advocate, one difference between the effects of the two quoted passages is that while Scratch's post is undoubtedly nasty (akin to taunting Droopy about drinking), your post is not overtly nasty, but is seen by some, in retrospect, as potentially improving someone's chances of identifying Scratch.

for what it's worth, I guess I fall somewhere in the middle: I think that your post was unfortunate in the possible effect I mentioned above, but I don't feel that it is a hanging matter.

I like you as a mod, and I'm sure that I would like you as a person, if we were to meet in real life.

If it ever comes to a vote (I don't know if Shades would do it that way) you can count on me. Nothing to do with how I feel about Scratch, Chino Blanco, Pahoran, DCP or anyone else - just how I feel about you.
