“My position is that the Democratic Party has brought the demise of Black America," the artist said. McNaughton described his controversial painting on his website: “This painting is a beacon to all Americans, to free yourselves from the government bondage that enslaves your very soul. Be free of the old taskmaster that will offer you all the comforts if you will but do his bidding. Rise up and be great in the sight of God!”

In fairness, McNaughton's painting is technically very good. However, it's puerile subject matter does make it less than art. It reminds me a little of posters from the old Soviet Union. Pure, unabashed propaganda.

Interesting that a slave should throw off his shackles in front of the Washington Monument which wasn't completed until 1884. Hmm.

If I understand the painting correctly, it's saying that blacks have been kept as slaves in modern times by the ebil government, and the subject of the painting is leading them out of enslavement.
i'm not sure what "technically very good" means, but I think it's a terrible painting.
