Bishop Puts Locks On 18 Year Old's Cell Phone
My 18 year old son just told me last night that one of his good friends who is planning on turning his papers in soon, met with the new Bishop a couple of nights ago and the Bishop asked for his cell phone, put locks on a bunch of the apps and then set the password so that only he will know it.
This young man has struggled with what he calls his "dark demon" for a couple of years now and is just riddled with guilt over it. He had to meet with the former Bishop every week to "report" his progress or set backs. He even tied his hands to his bed posts every night at one point.
Ok....I hate this! Hate this! Hate this!
He's told my son that he doesn't even want to serve a mission but knows his parents would flip out if he doesn't. He's a great kid and it kills me to see what this does to him.
This new Bishop is so controlling and I have never cared for him at all. I know there are wonderful Bishops out there that would not even consider doing this, but has anyone else heard of this being done?
I told my son that the bottom line is that this young man is allowing the Bishop to have power and control over him....but I completely understand what he's going through. Ugh!

That is horrible. My heart is SICK for this young man! I've not heard a story like this that is from a one-on-one experience, just group talks about making sure there are locks and passwords on phones. That poor kid has to be so guilt ridden 24/7 when he should be enjoying this time of his life.

Ah, good ole Mormon free agency. Whose plan was it in the premortal life to force people to be obedient? Could it be . . .

Interesting, an 18 year old has already been an apologist and launching nasty attacks on critics and non-intellectual TBMs at FAIR for two years now?

I'm pretty skeptical of stories like this nowadays... especially the part where the kid ties both his hands to the bedposts. How the hell do you tie both hands to the bedpost without leaving enough slack to reach your pecker?
I think you are being fed a line...

Either that, or the kid is into self-bondage. Each year people die from autoerotic asphyxiation precisely because they are able to tie themselves up without being able to escape safely.

I doubt that any bishop can take a cell phone away from anybody. It is an invasion of privacy. And where are the boys parents in all this? I think that you are experiencing an early april fool's story.

I've met enough control-freak bishops to realize that, though I'm skeptical, this isn't that far-fetched a story.

Well, sure, that's a possibility. But here's my experience with stories like this: I've never experienced a bishop who's acted this way, nor have I met anyone who has experienced such a bishop, and furthermore, the stories I've heard have so many degrees of separation between the raconteur and the audience that they can't be verified.
In this case, you have one teenager telling another teenager a story which is then relayed onto the mother of the teenager who heard the story. In my house, stories of injustice amongst teenagers run rampant and a bit of questioning usually leads to less-interesting but more plausible truths.

All I know is what he's told my son. My son isn't lying nor am I.
Also, my son knows this boy can no longer use lots of his apps on his phone. So either he lied to my son or it's what the Bishop did. I know this man and don't doubt he'd be this controlling.
