Are politics part of the topic Mormon Discussions?

Post by _huckelberry »

I think there is reason to consider any thread exploring right wing political beliefs to be on topic for Mormon Discussions. I realize not all Mormons hold to the rightest line of thought but it is after all an important part of Mormonism in its modern diversity. I may be somewhat slanted in my understanding here. The last years I listened or watched general conference Apostle Ezra Benson always treated us with an important political exposition. Several people in our ward could do the same in talks.

There are a group of interesting topics which come up about Mormonism. None will be settled to the satisfaction of everybody. One of those topics is the political dimension. I have no hope of finding agreement with BCspace or Droopy, i do not expect to convert them but they do represent a significant aspect of Mormon culture. I remain curious hoping to better understand.

bcspace and droopy represent a fanatical extreme Mormonism mingled with far right-wing Repbulicanism, but not anything close to the mainstream of the LDS church. It is unfortunate that they are the two most visible believing LDS on this board since they are nothing like the LDS I rub shoulders with at church.

I agree with your OP, huckelberry, and would answer the poll question that I believe many political discussions would benefit from staying in the Mormon Discussions forums. But I'm also interested in the subject so I don't mind dropping in on the Off-Topics forum where I assume they usually have been moved.

It's probably dependent on the actual subject on a case-by-case basis and requires judgement, but that would require grown-ups table manners.

I wish Mormonism could separate itself from politics, but right now they are linked. Why ignore the obvious?
