Most Recent TBM to Use MDB to Find Answers?

Post by _honorentheos »

I'm curious who, if anyone, came to MDB in 2012 who first arrived as a TBM who had read or been told information about the church that contradicted the Sunday School version of LDS history they had been taught?

I signed up here in 2010 about the same time as zeezrom, Darth J, LDST, just me and a number of others. I had been posting on what was then MAD since 2007 primarily as a critical voice and made the transition here during the purge when many of the more interesting critical voices were banned.

It seemed like there were more people looking for answers then rather than now on the message board forums. Has the model shifted since then? Are sites like mormonthink.com fulfilling the need more efficiently than the message board format?

That's an excellent question. Nevertheless, no matter how popular or efficient sites like that one become, there will always be a need for message boards because many people will nevertheless wish to connect with actual humans who have "been down that road" in order to obtain pointers and what not.

A fair point, Dr. Shades. And I appreciate you providing a little piece of the internet where that can take place.

I do think it's worth thinking about, though, if only to consider how to tailor your board to the greatest need and the particular niche you occupy.

Anyway, I'm really interested if anyone has come here in 2012 who was beginning the journey? Or is the board now more of a destination rather than a vehicle? Could it still be a vehicle, even if it needed to adapt some in order to pick up passengers from a different place in life than it has in the past?

Well, I certainly learned a lot this year. Thanks to MDB, some burning questions I had were answered, like "Who was Gustave Courbet?"
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

I have relayed a few "investigators" to this site, but they have only lurked so far.
About Joseph Smith.. How do you think his persona was influenced by being the storyteller since childhood? Mastering the art of going pale, changing his voice, and mesmerizing his audience.. How do you think he was influenced by keeping secrets and lying for his wife and the church members for decades?

That's interesting, Uther. If the opportunity arises, it would be interesting to hear more about their experiences navigating church history information. I wonder how it compares to just five or six years ago?
