Do people think the reason men wear conservative looking suits and ties compared to women wearing bright colors, flowers, bows, lace is due to evolution?

If so, evolution has occurred very rapidly since the 16th century in Europe and North America.

I think some of the indicators that we have turned into markers of attractiveness are evolutionary and indicate sexual health, the ability to produce healthy babies. The others are a mixture of evolution and culture and indicate the ability to provide and care for offspring. Men and women put different import on these indicators.

I don't view this as an attack on women or our sexuality. As for threads devolving, they all do, either to "your mama" or sex. Not nearly a "Lord of the Flies" demonstration, but it does reflect human nature.

I have found that my inability to 'correctly' answer the age old question as to whether a particular piece of clothing artificially enhances the size of my wife's posterior is somehow related to where I sleep that night. It is times like that I come near to understanding how some truths are not useful.

Both are a form of advertising. One is to attract the eye of very visual men and is most likely used to accentuate the primary sexual indicators: breasts, waist, buttocks, calves, legs, thighs, eyes, lips, etc. The other is used to advertise social status and wallet size, while accentuating shoulders, waist, etc.

The use of clothes as advertising much predates the 16th century.

Does is advertise wealth and the ideal of the culture of the time? Then it is effective advertising.

As others have noted, some of this is simply cultural. In times past, men certainly have used clothing to advertise wealth, power, and, well, other things.

It's all about attracting a mate, landing and keeping a good job (survival).

So back to the original point. At what point does natural behavior become sexist?
