An Open Mind

Post by _Kittens_and_Jesus »

When I was about 17 or so, sitting in the Priest quorum meeting, I remember having a lesson from the bishop concerning having an open mind.

He told us that he was proud of not having an open mind.

He said that "When the mind is open, all sorts of ideas can just fly in! The Devil himself will throw all sorts of new ideas your way!"

It kind of reminds me of Packer's famous "Some facts are not very useful."

This was about the time I left the church. I was already on my way out before this happened, and I wonder if anyone else had a similar experience.
As soon as you concern yourself with the 'good' and 'bad' of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others weaken and defeat you. - O'Sensei

Such a statement as your Bishop made should send any reasonable member on a quest for a better worldview.
David Hume: "---Mistakes in philosophy are merely ridiculous, those in religion are dangerous."

DrW: "Mistakes in science are learning opportunities and are eventually corrected."

Your mind is like a parachute. It's only useful if it's open.

You're pretty much dead if it's closed.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

Kittens and Jesus,

That is really amazing but I believe it. Strange things are often said by lay teachers and administrators in the organization. I know I've said crazy things too back in the day.
