That said, with the Book of Mormon, we are not dealing with a civilization with no written record. What we are dealing with is a written record with no civilization. (Runtu, Feb 2015)

Cult is a loaded word.
I mean, we can't quite compare it to the Branch Davidians, Jonestown or Heavens Gate, can we?
This isn't the days of the MMM where so many would willingly take such extreme measures. Not to mention, could you imagine TSM saying "...vengeance is mine and I have taken a little..."
The church is watering itself down to the point of just being one of those protestant churches, nothing to see here..

As soon as you concern yourself with the 'good' and 'bad' of your fellows, you create an opening in your heart for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others weaken and defeat you. - O'Sensei

When I read the thread title, I thought it had finally happened - Members having to clean the chapel has led to a ban on bringing Cheerios to Sacrament meeting in little Tupperware containers.*
Since the article is about the MTC, comparisons to the Branch Davidian compound aren't that far off. There was a time missionaries at the MTC could go to the mall on their P-Day to buy necessities. Now, it's a fortress against the world and none go in or come out without permission. And you don't get permission. The MTC is very cult-like.
*I could count the number of times I've seen actual green jello at an LDS ward function on one hand. And I'd have to go way back to my childhood to do it. But dry cereal in tupperware defines Mormonism to me. Parents packing dry cereal into sacrament meeting to distract their fussy toddlers during the 1 hour 20 minute dronefest is as Mormon as white shirts and faux leather scripture totes. There seems to be some underlying symbolism in it, too, if I could just put my finger on it....
