Another chronology paradox

Post by _SteelHead »

While perusing the Joseph Smith papers tonight I noticed this:
I meet with the presid ency, at the west school room in the Chapel to attend to the ordinance of annointing our heads with holy oil— also the councils of Zion Kirtland and Zion, meet in the two ad joining rooms, who waited in prayer while we attended to the ordinance,— I took the oil in my <left> right hand, father Smith being seated before me and the rest of the pre sidency encircled him round about,— we then streched our right hands to heaven and blessed the oil and concecrated it in the name of Jesus Christ— we then laid our hands on, our aged fath[er] Smith, and invoked, the blessings of heaven,— I then annointed his head with the concecrated oil, and sealed many blessings upon his <him,> head, the presidency then in turn, laid their hands upon his head, begenning at the eldest, untill they had all laid their hands on him, and pronounced such blessings, upon his head as the Lord put into their hearts— all blessing him to be our patraark [patriarch], and <to> annoint our [p. 135] heads, and attend to all duties that pertain to this <that> office. — I then took the seat, and father annoint[ed] my head, and sealed upon me, the blessings, of Moses, to lead Israel in the latter days, even as moses led them <him> in days of old,—also the blessings of Abraham Isaac and Jacob,— all of the presidency laid their hands upon me and pronounced upon my head many prophesies, and blessings, many of which I shall not notice at this time, but as Paul said, so say I, let us come to vissions and revelations,

What type of ordinance was this, where the blessings of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob plus the leadership of Israel like Moses were sealed upon Joseph's head two months before the restoration of the sealing power? It is described as an anointing and as an ordinance in which blessings are sealed, hence a sealing ordinance.

Somehow Joseph Smith was able to marry Fanny Alger before the restoration of the sealing power and now we have sealing ordinances being performaned before said restoration also. I am really beginning to believe that the official narrative is very tightly controlled to cover what appears to be Joseph Smith just making it up as he went along.

It sounds to me just like what TBMs would say is a patriarchal blessing.

And when they say "sealed" I don't think it means sealed as in temple sealing. I mean first one annoints with oil, and then in a separate act one seals the annointing and pronounces blessings, just like we all did that during administration to the sick and whatnot.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

Yeah I thought that also that perhaps it was just more akin to a priesthood blessing. But in reading this he was sealed with the blessings of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and sealed to be the leader of Israel. Now while we call a temple wedding a sealing LDS.org teaches that the restoration of the sealing power is the power to bind in heaven and to bind on earth. The sealing of the blessings of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob upon a couple is now part of the temple wedding ceremony, pronounced upon the couple after the "yes's".

I have read elsewhere, apologists claim (Micahel Waltman claims this over on the Brian Hales comments section on the mormonstories page) that when Joseph was called to the apostleship he received the sealing power, hence these ordinances, and the wedding to Fanny were performed with the sealing power. This then just begs the question of what Elijah actually did, if the sealing power was already present? Why send Elijah to restore it?

What a muddled mess.

I noticed in the History of the Church that very early on Joseph was sealing groups of people up to eternal life during preaching.
