It's too bad that your Mormon prom was lame. Our Stake had a Mormon prom and my kids had more fun at the Mormon prom than they did at the school prom. They went to both. We had the Mormon Prom at a really nice country club and the DJ was really great. They also had a nicer picture set up than the school dance and it was a lot less expensive for the kids to get their pictures taken at our prom than the school's.

I guess it just depends on how things are organized.

I think it depends on the year too. I saw one this past year that looked much better, and it's becoming more competitive.

It's still completely, completely irrelevant. I imagine Mormons have more fun at their prom since I've noticed many devout Mormons have trouble loosening up and relaxing/being themselves in social settings like parties and dances. When it's all or mostly Mormons in their environment many act very different than when they're the only one. They know how to function comfortably as a tribe.

Should there be a Muslim prom and Jewish prom and Baptist prom also? If everyone did what the Mormon church and segregated themselves based on their religion it'd be terrible.

The excuse is that it's because prom is 'immoral'. Why not have a prom with 'high standards' with baptists, muslims, jews, etc that are also interested in the high standards? The truth is Mormons are very concerned with Mormons staying in their bubble, especially when it comes to dating. That's what the Mormon prom is an outgrowth of.

In our case, we actually had some non members attend the Mormon prom as well. The big draw to our prom was the difference in cost. There was no entry fee for the Mormon prom. There was a charge for pictures but not for getting into the dance itself. The school prom was $100 per couple! Add that onto the cost of dinner, a corsage, new clothes, pictures(which there was also an additional charge for), and it just doesn't make any sense as long as the dances are comparable when it comes to music, etc.

In response to your comment, I think that it would probably make sense for the parents f LDS kids to become more involved in the local High School PTA so that the dances can be planned in a way that are comfortable for everyone.

I wonder if that guy was just expressing his overwhelming feeling of edification, or if he just wanted to be heard in nearly every nation in the world at the same time for the fun of it.

Those seem to cut across teens of any or no religious stripes. I thought that there might have been some kind of planned or permitted activity, or lax dress standards, at the high school prom that perhaps was not within LDS 'standards'. From what I know of the typical high school prom, the LDS standards thing is only an issue in some remote Utah areas where skirt length cannot stop above the knee or more than so many inches above the knee. I thought that sort of thing is what you might have been alluding to.

Did many of the LDS kids in your area not go to the high school prom and only go to the Mormon prom, or was it mostly an extra activity with the LDS kids having hit both of them? From the sounds of the cost issue, it might be some did not go to the high school one, opting instead for just the no charge LDS prom.

That's exactly what ended up happening. The school prom is a Junior-Senior prom. When you're a Junior, it's new, and you usually want to go to see what it's all about. But normally, after you go your Junior year, what happened with my kids was that they said, "Forget it, the LDS Prom was more fun, and less money."
