There was a charge for pictures but not for getting into the dance itself. The school prom was $100 per couple! Add that onto the cost of dinner, a corsage, new clothes, pictures(which there was also an additional charge for), and it just doesn't make any sense as long as the dances are comparable when it comes to music, etc.
We have a Mormon Prom here in SoCal that is pretty big. They usually have it at a cultural landmark like the Gene Autry Museum in Burbank, the Natural History Museum, or the Long Beach Aquarium. They go all out on decorations and the DJ. It's not free, but it's still a really good value. The youth are bused in from the local stakes (they all meet with their dates at the stake centers). I've always heard really good things about the evening (good food, great music, other good entertainment).
The biggest differences between the School Proms and the Mormon Proms that I can tell are the dress standards (girls can't dress like prostitutes), fewer kids are showing up intoxicated, less offensive music and dancing.
