There was a charge for pictures but not for getting into the dance itself. The school prom was $100 per couple! Add that onto the cost of dinner, a corsage, new clothes, pictures(which there was also an additional charge for), and it just doesn't make any sense as long as the dances are comparable when it comes to music, etc.

We have a Mormon Prom here in SoCal that is pretty big. They usually have it at a cultural landmark like the Gene Autry Museum in Burbank, the Natural History Museum, or the Long Beach Aquarium. They go all out on decorations and the DJ. It's not free, but it's still a really good value. The youth are bused in from the local stakes (they all meet with their dates at the stake centers). I've always heard really good things about the evening (good food, great music, other good entertainment).

The biggest differences between the School Proms and the Mormon Proms that I can tell are the dress standards (girls can't dress like prostitutes), fewer kids are showing up intoxicated, less offensive music and dancing.

If other alternate proms were as successful as Mormon Proms seem to be, then it would be great experience for the Muslim, Jewish or Baptist youth and more power to them! If they're as offended and uncomfortable at the School Proms as some LDS youth are, then I hope they do something on their own.

Maybe something could be done with the help of the LDS Prom planners, but I'm not going to criticize the LDS Prom planners just because that hasn't happened yet.

The excuse is that it's because prom is 'immoral'. Why not have a prom with 'high standards' with baptists, muslims, jews, etc that are also interested in the high standards? The truth is Mormons are very concerned with Mormons staying in their bubble, especially when it comes to dating. That's what the Mormon prom is an outgrowth of.

The Mormon Proms are an "outgrowth" of School Proms becoming increasingly expensive and negative experiences for LDS (and other?) youth. Faced with the choice of paying lots of money for what was commonly an awful experience, or just staying home (and missing out on the many good experiences that were possible), Mormons decided to roll up their sleeves and do it right.

If there were no Mormon Proms and LDS kids were complaining about the School Proms, then the obvious response would be "Hey, if you don't like the School Proms why don't you start your own?" But, having done so, now we're supposed to believe they're manifesting some flaw in LDS culture?
