But you said no bishop or stake president ever refuses to help those in need. I gave you two examples just from my family.

And I subsequently volunteered to help and I am sure other members did too. Is that so wrong?

I love your idea of a park, Rollo. I can think of so many fascinating ways that could have been built into the existing area, highlighting its history rather than obliterating it.

Yeah, Jesus would have been mortified to be seen with sinners and the poor.

As a missionary who served in Temple Square, I know that we try to have a positive experience with everyone and spend a few minutes talking to them.

You mean missionaries?

You must have never served a mission. Because from my experience, service and proselyting go hand in hand.

Nice dodge -- King Benjamin is much more on point with regard to this issue.

People shouldn't deliberately be digging holes into alcoholism or addiction.

I don't know of anyone who "deliberately" sets out to become an alcoholic or addict.

If they aren't doing it deliberately, they will seek help - and help they will receive. If the Spirit or the power of logic resolves upon a leader that a person should be helped and they are worthy of that help, then it is such that shall be given according to his need.

Wrong. According to King Benjamin, help should be given "according to their wants" (see Mosiah 4:26). According to King Benjamin, everyone is "worthy" of help and it's our job to give it to them, because, as I'm sure you are well aware, we are ALL beggers before God, each of us just as "unworthy" as the next.

I know I personally have helped and will continue to "pay it forward." It's our responsibility as individual Latter-day Saints to do that.

Then stop being so damn judgmental toward your fellow men and women.

But keep them the hell away from your house, right?

What has been the net effect on the economy of Salt Lake City?
(I want figures)

The Church rolled up its sleeves and got to work on protecting the front door of the Church.

No it didn't. It took a large chunk out of the widows mite and tarted up the view from the Prophets multi million dollar penthouse apartment.
The front door of the Church is every single single ward and branch where the members get to clean toilets because the Church cannot afford janitors.

Sorry if you're a hipster who shops at thrift stores (like the DI), but some people also enjoy shopping at the Gap and/or Brooks Brothers.

Where would Jesus shop?
That said, with the Book of Mormon, we are not dealing with a civilization with no written record. What we are dealing with is a written record with no civilization. (Runtu, Feb 2015)

Mostly insanely hilarious "if you only knew" insult I've ever gotten!

Show me a homeless person in Salt Lake that genuinely wants to work and I'll show him a check to help him get started. That's a promise.

I don't think Jesus would have a problem with that. He'd probably even go over and sit with them and offer any help/comfort He could.

What if they started insulting you and your beliefs?

Plenty of protestors/missionaries already do this around Temple Square -- grow a thicker skin, friend.
