Canadians?

Do You (two) know that the second biggest Hungarian city is/was Cleveland?

Thanks, Paul!

I missed seeing this earlier, but really appreciate your vote of confidence!

As far as needing an apology, I thank you for thinking that as well. But I really don't feel I need an apology and Gadianton's post helps explain why. The very existence of sock puppets on message boards plus the thought that I'm in here along with the rest of the gang, make me both understand and accept the things that go on when there's drama and anonymity.

This is the thing that shocked you, Paul?

Interesting!!!

Cleveland's not that far!

Both my husband and I are 2nd generation Canadians, our parents having emigrated here from Europe (not Hungary though!). His family is from the eastern part of Europe and mine from the northern part.

2nd generation, eh? My family came here in the 1500s, from France, on my mom's side. My dad's side, from Ireland 3 generations back.

LUDWIG! I'm so happy to see your face/avatar/words. (I've been to Cleveland, although I've not been to Toronto.)

I've been trying to stay out of the drama surrounding "the ruling," or I would have seen Toronto's guess that you were a sock and vouched for you as well. I certainly remember you posting here for a long time and with enough posts to tell that your "voice" is not the same as liz's.

P.S. Put a avatar up so we can associate a visual with you!

What I don't understand is that Paloma joined this board in 2010. Talk about a long con if she is a puppet! The frequency of posting shouldn't matter, it's having been signed up for years and having contributed kind and thoughtful posts that impact readers positively.

What about Paloma could possibly trigger the sock accusation? The fact that she had a positive comment about another poster with whom some people are currently disagreeing? That's a bit shallow. It is possible to be 60/40 or 80/20 about somebody. It doesn't have to always be 100% against. So you can disagree with a person's opinions, comments or actions while still finding something good to say about them.

I find it destructive that a perceived atmosphere or environment can cause people to turn against each other without cause. If you think someone's playing games, just step back and let it work itself out if you want to avoid being taken for a ride. I understand that sentiment. I don't like being taken advantage of either. But I don't understand turning on another (innocent) board member and publicly concluding that they are not being genuine. If you suspect that, why not PM a mod and let them handle it? In many cases, it's not enough to merely say sorry after issuing an unfounded accusation. We can all say that we're adults, this is "only" cyberspace, etc to try and minimize the damage our words (yes, written ones too) can inflict. But we obviously take our time and efforts here seriously and safeguard our on-board identities via our board names, so it feels real as in it's not just a board game, we feel that we're putting our true selves out there, and words and attitudes can hurt.

I remember a long ways back when I first posted on the FAIR board. I was a recent ex-member. I had no clue at the time of the disdain many Mormons seem to have towards converts (like me) and especially towards those who have left the church (BICs and converts alike) and I didn't realize I would be viewed with suspicion and dislike at a seemingly academic-oriented, church-related site. One of my first, completely innocuous posts was trashed by a poster who happened to be a senior mod there, I later found. The only reason for the reaction that I could come up with was because I was ex and they took that personally, or something like that. I was shocked that it would elicit so much anger and distrust to the extent that they read into my post something that was absolutely not there. Later I had a slight run-in with one of the mods in public view (same one as above) and again could see no reason for it other than that s/he was just generally ill-tempered. A couple of my still innocuous posts were cut short (threads I initiated were closed off) and in one or two this same mod screamed at me in red ink. All of it was nothing generated by me. Of course, s/he or they would disagree with my view on that. But those posts of mine were as middle-of-the-road and non-argumentative as 99% of all my posts on any board on which I have participated for over 10 years now.

I had different expectations of a board like that, being at least nominally related to the church. At least, I thought that in public view they would attempt to present a more peaceable discussion site. I had good intentions in my posting there and was interested in the material they discussed. So, I was shocked to be viewed as the enemy. I understand that they see so-called critics as the enemy but I was never in that category, not having a deep knowledge of Mormon doctrine or any strong desire to debate the issues.

Even though now we see how that board and its reincarnations wish to operate and how outsiders are treated, it was not pleasant for me to post there. I haven't even read it now for a long time. I used to find it interesting just to lurk. Then I just faded away. Likely they don't care. Even though I wasn't attached to that board and knew no-one, it was still uncomfortable to get such a reaction. Kind of reminded me of trying to fit in at the Mormon ward to which I was assigned. Maybe it's something to do with some of the beliefs why many converts don't fit into the expected places. That was my experience anyway.

People could say that mod was out of order or a known bad-tempered person or true enough they don't value anyone but academicians, etc. Even though I didn't form any friendships there and nobody knew me and I had not much to contribute, I still remember that it was a shock to get that red ink telling me off. I forget the specific details of what they said I was doing wrong. It was my first lesson about how people can totally read into your comments something you didn't intend and that it's almost impossible to reverse that impression.

So, Paloma, from that experience and others, and from how I feel about participating on boards, even occasionally, I know how it feels to receive an unwarranted accusation. It may seem slight to others and so there's not much sympathy to be had. But it can hurt and makes us see things differently - not necessarily for the better.

In this case, though, I sense that the Canadians in the crowd may be clicking glasses in a toast to one another soon enough. An American friend and I were recently discussing a third party disagreement between some Canadians and Americans. He offered the following statement about the differences between the two nationalities:

Canadians say "let's all come to a mutually satisfactory solution" vs. the American "FU".

That about sums up the way I see these board interactions. It made me laugh but also acknowledge at least my own peace-loving common-ground approach. Paloma's is similar, as I have seen over many years. There is a place for that in this world, and on this board and others. It may not be exciting but it can be the glue that we need to hold things together.

Meanwhile, I haven't posted here for a long time either, or much at all in any age. But I too am no sock!
