What I don't understand is that Paloma joined this board in 2010. Talk about a long con if she is a puppet! The frequency of posting shouldn't matter, it's having been signed up for years and having contributed kind and thoughtful posts that impact readers positively.

What about Paloma could possibly trigger the sock accusation? The fact that she had a positive comment about another poster with whom some people are currently disagreeing? That's a bit shallow. It is possible to be 60/40 or 80/20 about somebody. It doesn't have to always be 100% against. So you can disagree with a person's opinions, comments or actions while still finding something good to say about them.

Nightingale,

If you're responding to me, then point taken. I haven't looked at P's stats at all. You're absolutely right that given the posting history of P it would be extraordinarily unlikely for him/her to be a sockpuppet of someone having issues recently, and especially someone who doesn't show a high aptitude for long-con sockpuppetry.

I was just assuming, without investigating, that s/he had just joined recently. I was throwing out reasons why people on the board might be inclined to see a sockpuppet even when the person hadn't done anything wrong.

I also see LDSTorronto as a man of high moral character. I can see the misunderstanding.

Anyway, at this point, it doesn't look like anyone thinks Paloma is a sock, so the matter seems to have worked itself out.

I am not sure why it matters. Socks proliferate on this board.

Hey, guys, calm down. You are all missing the context. I didn't outright accuse Paloma of being a sock; in response to Paloma's sudden re-appearance AND her commentary on the 'community' aspect of this board (which I believe has disappeared over the past couple of years), I said she was either a sock of Liz's OR naïve.

It was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, humorous, sarcastic, dry, and...Canadian. In context, it's witty. But, Canadian wit transcends no border; I almost feel Hungarian. Please don't tell Shades about this thread.

And Paloma, I'll point out that while your friends have jumped to your defence, claiming you are not a sock, they have not jumped to your defence and claimed you are not naïve.

;)

I have no idea who Paloma is, but I have never had a beef with Paloma.

P.S. Put a avatar up so we can associate a visual with you!

Thanks, Blixa!

And I would put up an avatar, if I knew how.

Several years ago, I remember that I got John Hamer to help me with an avatar on another board.

I'll need to take time to try and figure it out, but I'm not at all gifted technically!

Being Canadian, I get that!

And I also get why you took issue with my "community" comment. Admittedly wishful thinking ... but it's also what I see very imperfectly displayed.

Hi Gadianton. Thanks for your reply. I wasn't thinking of you specifically in my response. I didn't even look back to see who had said what. I just remembered the terms sock puppet and long con in some of the replies and so repeated them.

I know I went on a bit, on a tangent. It is mostly the thoughts that came to me as I thought of Paloma, a peaceable long-time board member, perhaps being taken aback at being viewed as an outsider, especially one up to no good, when I know the opposite is true.

I am happy to see that, as you say, it's working itself out to a good end.

That about sums up the way I see these board interactions. It made me laugh but also acknowledge at least my own peace-loving common-ground approach. Paloma's is similar, as I have seen over many years. There is a place for that in this world, and on this board and others. It may not be exciting but it can be the glue that we need to hold things together.

Meanwhile, I haven't posted here for a long time either, or much at all in any age. But I too am no sock!

Nightingale, we recognized each other as two peace-loving souls long ago ... and have been friends ever since!

Thanks!
