Interesting. Of course, the Mormon presence varies across the state. Orem is not Price is not Park City.
So, why don't the politics reflect this? Or do they?

One Word - Caucuses.
Utah is the last State in the Union that has binding caucuses. There is a petition for open Primaries but the Utah Legislature has proposed a bill that will thwart the initiative.
Utah Politics
Republican hierarchy - Brother Smith you are hereby called to serve as State Legislator in the House for and behalf of the citizens of Magna.
Caucuses Meeting - Brother and Sisters we are gathered here to sustain Brother Smith as State Legislator in the House, all those in favor raise your right hand. All those opposed, we don't give a crap.

any first-past-the-post electoral system is going to over-represent the preferences of the majority.
and as already pointed out, the anti-democratic way the Utah GOP chooses its candidates results in a legislature that's even less representative of overall voter preferences.

Are LDS the only folks allowed to be conservative? States like Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona...etc... are just as conservative with far less LDS. The US goes back and forth on what party is dominate, currently about 47% Democrat's to 44% rep's. If history stays true this will change...the current trend is more independents.

For me, separation of church and state means --- among others --- that the state doesn't care church(es).
See First Amendment to the United States Constitution
Then, how the state knows about any statistical data of religious affiliation?
Or the religion of politicians, or --- for gods (yes!) sake --- of religion of THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES ?
Mormon (Mormon???) identity?
Muslim identity?
Satanist identity? (Hey LaVey...)
During our last census, there was an entry of religion. It was not a compulsory rubric. Case closed, I think.
by the way my wife mentioned her one... and there was no place for marking "Mormon (X) "
