The Church is dishonest
BYU states on their websites that seminary is not required by highly recommended. Yet my daughter (a life long active member) gets rejected for just that. Go figure, graduating 9th in her class of 400, 11 AP classes, National Honor society, Scores a 30 on her ACT and fully endorsed by her Bishop and SP. Attended Seminary 3 of the four years of high school but will not graduate. Yet she is rejected at BYU Idaho (97% acceptance rate by the way), BYU Hawaii and just today BYU Provo. Two of my older children went to Provo and Idaho and have graduated. Yet my next child is rejected???? I had a long discussion with BYUI and after 30 minutes, they finally in so many words said it was seminary. Wow!!! Thought is wasn't a requirement?? Two days before she got her rejection letter they called her Seminary teacher. Wow!! Why would they call her seminary teacher?? It clearly states that seminary is not required. Provo, her real choice says that Seminary factors in 10%. With her grades, church endorsements, AP classes, ACT Scores etc. That is not enough to overcome Seminary. Seminary is not a level playing field in the church. Some have it in their schools, some have home study and others only have early morning. But it is amazing when the church states it is not a requirement to get in yet she is rejected because of it. The church is dishonest. If you are a member, it is a requirement. If you are not a member or can throw a football, it is overlooked. The Church is dishonest in that seminary is a requirement and they just don't want to admit it. Had it been openly stated that it was a requirement, I suppose she would have complied with seminary requirements. So I guess dishonesty is just a big part of the church. Oh yea, I forgot, Lying for the Lord is OK.................NOT

They're doing you a big favor. Now find a real university and appreciate that you've dodged a bullet.

I agree. I went to both BYU-I and BYU. I don't acknowledge either on my resume.
With her grades, she should be able to get a scholarship at a state school. It may hurt now, but she'll eventually realize that she dodged a bullet.
Trimble, you ignorant sack of rhinoceros puss. The only thing more obvious than your lack of education is the foul stench that surrounds you.
Re: The Church is dishonest
I didn't attend much Seminary in my last year. However, I graduated fully by completing the course work, about one worksheet for each day missed. The worksheets were so easy an AP student such as her could have done a hundred of them in a week.

Re: The Church is dishonest
You have no idea what you are talking about. I travel almost every week and she has no ride to seminary. It is amazing that she was accepted to Notre Dame with scholarships and 15 other Universities and yet is rejected from BYU for not completing seminary. In a day when the Mormon Church is losing so many of its youth, it is amazing that the BYU does what it does. No I believe the ST or BP or Seminary Teacher said something in their endorsements to hurt her chances. Yet she could have cranked out hundreds of lesson make ups but then that would require the approval of the CES department. They told us it would relagate the early morning program to a hybrid home study course. It is ok, she is a good Mormon and a wonderful person and she and my money will go to Notre Dame. I have taken all I can take by the SLCC. BYU doenst want smart bright kids to attend their universities, they only want minions without opinions...and also not gay, don't masterbate and don't watch porn.

The BYU admissions website also states that 96 percent of admitted freshmen are four-year-seminary graduates, so it isn't really a secret that seminary graduation is highly valued.

It's a clear case of BYU's loss and her gain. ND is awesome choice....and congrats to your daughter.

To be fair, BYU is extremely competitive. I've known kids with 4.0's, class president, etc. etc. that have been rejected. There are likely many applicants with the same or better credentials, so the seminary, although not required, still plays a part in the decision when all other things are equal.
Congrats on Notre Dame.
Congrats on Notre Dame.
Re: The Church is dishonest
So your daughter is in Notre Dame instead of BYU? What's the problem here?
Re: The Church is dishonest
Congrats on her getting into Notre Dame with scholarships!
I went to BYU, but I probably wouldn't get in today if I had to do it again (of course, today I wouldn't even try to go to BYU...).
I agree with the others: your daughter dodged a bullet. She'll probably have a great experience at ND.

Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen
