Unfulfilled promises from the pulpit

Post by _ZelphtheGreat »

James E. Talmage promised, in 1916 in general conference, that there were people present that day who would live to read the books of the lost tribes of Israel.

How many other unfilled promises have been made over the pulpit, by GA's to the Church?

All of them...
That said, with the Book of Mormon, we are not dealing with a civilization with no written record. What we are dealing with is a written record with no civilization. (Runtu, Feb 2015)

Well, now, that's not exactly true. When they announce the next speaker, they usually get that right.

But that about as high as the bar gets.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

Same excuse as patriarchal blessing innit. Millennium/you never die.

(Do you have a quote though, I'd like to see that)

Conditional prophecy. Didn't come true because all of you sinned.

Then in October conference Elder Talmage spoke again of the lost tribes and made this remarkable prediction: “The ten tribes shall come; they are not lost unto the Lord; they shall be brought forth as hath been predicted; and I say unto you there are those now living—aye, some here present—who shall live to read the records of the Lost Tribes of Israel, which shall be made one with the record of the Jews, or the Holy Bible, and the record of the Nephites, or the Book of Mormon, even as the Lord hath predicted” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1916, p. 76)

“Who can tell us of the inhabitants of this little planet that shines of an evening, called the moon?... When you inquire about the inhabitants of that sphere you find that the most learned are as ignorant in regard to them as the ignorant of their fellows. So it is in regard to the inhabitants of the sun. Do you think it is inhabited? I rather think it is. Do you think there is any life there? No question of it; it was not made in vain.”

- Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 13, p. 271

In light of subsequent moon landings, this seems unlikely. Still, Tobin might say that we can't be sure one way or another until we have searched the entire surface of the moon.

There may be Quakers holding their breath behind all those rocks seen in moon photographs.

There was a similar Thread here about this topic from November of 2011: - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=21188

Since it is now March of 2014, I believe that everybody from that meeting is now dead.
