Was Joseph Smith a false prophet every time he learned something new?
Was Joseph Smith a true prophet every time he claimed sonething which subsequently turned out to be wrong?
The truth of a man being a prophet is that God will from time to time manifest something to his prophet. This occurs regardless of what the prophet already knows or does not know. Joseph Smith dictated the Book of Mormon but remained rather dim about the standard of righteousness witnessed of in that book. When did Joseph ever man up and go through the people ALMA-like and bring judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet? Yet he continued getting the Restoration poured out upon him.
It was not given to him to comprehend Book of Mormon geography. Why? Possibly because the Gentiles were so flagrantly trampling upon the gospel that it would be imprudent to allow them greater witness than what they already could not tolerate. The early Mormons never ceased being protestant-headed-proud-best-of-the-best spiritual fools. I honestly think less than dozen actually got the gospel of Jesus Christ correctly with power in the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost. And that was so incidental to their expectations that these hardly appreciated it or thought it the foundation of Zion and the destiny and earnest of the Kingdom of God upon the earth.

The problem is that Prophet's have no idea wether or not God is manifesting something to them. There are a plethora of examples where Joseph thought something had been manifested to him by God, only to have them subsequently be shown to be nothing of the kind. This trend of Prophets having a success rate akin to a fortune teller getting the odd thing right continues through to this day. You'd be better off (at least no worse off) getting answers from a Magic 8 ball as relying on a Prophet.
That said, with the Book of Mormon, we are not dealing with a civilization with no written record. What we are dealing with is a written record with no civilization. (Runtu, Feb 2015)

BULL FREAKING CRAP
D&C 85: 6 6 Yea, thus saith the still small voice, which whispereth through and pierceth all things, and often times it maketh my bones to quake while it maketh manifest, saying:
Beside this you got a cadre of 'morons' pressing upon Joseph 24/7 for him to BE THE PROPHET. God is not in the business of satisfying carnal desires for a prophet fix. So they pestered him relentlessly and he blustered a time or two. He was always just a man. But when the Lord of heaven had something that was to get through to his prophet it came down in spades and there is no mistaking when that occurs. The weakness of prophets is that sometimes a line here and a line there does come by way of a sudden stroke of an idea. Or like with me you can be drawn unbeknownst to take a certain picture of a mountain not knowing beforehand what is there. This subtlety of the Spirit opens up the imagination of THE MAN to wonder if this or that may be of God. The reality is in the pudding. If nothing comes of it then it was nothing.
The skeptical accuser of the prophet gets to make hay out of his weakness, even though they are never pronounced in the name of the Lord, while ignoring the greatness of prophets for what they do get right. You are under no condemnation for dismissing the weakness of prophets. You are sent to hell naked* for ignoring what they testified of in truth.
*I do not mean to imply that you are actually sent to hell naked. I am being more express for a greater impact upon your sensibilities.

Secrets of the gospel of Zion done right. The Book of Mormon is filled with the stuff. He taught it sparingly from the stand. Somehow the Gentile mind could not wrap its head around the whole-hearted-submission to Christ in taking his name upon them. This is beyond their faith. Their arrogance cancels it out before it is ever attempted. And that tells the tale of LDS hypocrisy that trashes all Mormons one way or another.
He got lots more right. But only this one point really matters.

Well, that is just an opinion. Plus, isn't that concept in the Bible?

James is my prophet, hear him. (For Pete's sake)
Not for my sake, but for his Zion, lest the whole world be wasted at his coming.

It is if you already know it. How do you figure 2000 years and NOBODY gets it? How is it 'just an opinion'?
I hope a real Zion cracks open the world before you guys leave earth.
