Letter "Requesting Our Presence" vs. an Arrest Warrant...

Post by _Eyepatch »

It's been years since I've seen the film, but I recall being bothered by a scene in which Hyrum and Joseph are discussing various issues in an ad-hoc "office" of sorts built within the then-in-construction Nauvoo temple.

Basically, Hyrum tells Joe that the Governor has sent them a letter requesting their presence...making it sound like a polite request has been made for them to come chat with the Governor. I think the "letter" is, in fact, a criminal arrest warrant. This is a heavy bending of the truth and is employed to mislead the viewers.

This is the sort of BS that makes me happy to be done with the "church."

Sorry, this was meant to be appended to the "Omissions and lies in The Restoration movie." thread. Will copy and paste there.

Illinois Governor Carlin issued an arrest warrant to supplement the Missouri warrant relating to Porter Rockwell's alleged assassination attempt on Missouri Govenor Boggs. (After spending time in the clink, Rockwell was released for lack of evidence and the warrants quashed).

There were other Missouri arrest warrants.

There was the Illinois arrest warrant for riot/treason relating to the Expositor business. However, Governor Ford talks in his memoirs about letters to the Prophet asking for his cooperation. Arrest warrants have no effect if they come by mail. I'd have to check the facts, but I don't think Joseph Smith was ever served that arrest warrant for treason; he surrendered voluntariliy to authorities in Carthage.

Generally speaking, if one is looking at an arrest warrant surrounded by friends and family in the comfort of one's own home or some public place, one has either been bailed out or acquitted. An arrest warrant comes with a constable and handcuffs. More likely, what you viewed was a depiction of a letter.

So because a person self surrenders before a warrant is executed, it's not misleading to characterize an arrest warrant as merely an invitation to talk.

Does the movie show Joseph Smith hiding in Iowa after he became aware of the warrant, before changing his mind and going back to Carthage?

Does it mention his declaration of martial law in Nauvoo?

How does it depict Joseph Smith ending up in jail once he got to Carthage?

I'm going with what Gov. Ford said. He sent Joseph Smith a letter. But a warrant had been issued for treason for the declaration of martial law. Ford said in his memoirs that the declaration of martial law was probably appropriate and not in excess of authority.

I wonder why Joseph Smith's initial reaction would be to flee across the Mississippi and hide, if he understood this to be a letter merely inviting him to come and chat.

So does the faith-promoting movie depict Joseph Smith initially running and hiding in Iowa?

Oh, well since this was all appropriate, there would be no reason to omit it from the faith-promoting movie, would there?
