Federal judge Barbara Crabb struck down Wisconsin's gay marriage ban today. The state and others argued for 'traditional' marriage. Judge Crabb disposed of that argument.
"As an initial matter, defendants and amici have overstated their argument. Throughout history, the most 'traditional' form of marriage has not been between one man and one woman, but between one man and multiple women, which presumably is not a tradition that defendants and amici would like to continue."
Crabb peeled back the layers, and noted: "Like moral disapproval, tradition alone proves nothing more than a state's desire to prohibit particular conduct," then cited a dissent of Justice Antonin Scalia in a 2003 sodomy case: "'preserving the traditional institution of marriage' is just a kinder way of describing the State's moral disapproval of same-sex couples."
Is it time for LDS to resume practicing the Principle?

Not yet...not until LGBT marriage is an established legal reality in all of the USA.
After that point, non-monogamous marriage (adult human beings, but adult human beings in all the various marital-type combinations which exist today) will--step-by-VERY-slow-step--become legal reality.
Legally, marriage is a contract. The problem with more-than-two-adults marriages is that protecting everyone equally is often going to prove very complicated. Since at least the 1960s, pioneering polyamorous committed family groups have done this in Band-Aid-type ways that often fall short of ideal, and are often awkward to carry out. (For example: Powers of Attorney made out in the various combinations...multiple bank accounts of various kinds...titles held either in various combinations according to the criteria of those directly involved, or as LLC's, etc. It is a MOSTLY workable, but VERY clunky way to live the practical realities of life. Which still leaves some areas--like the rights of hospital visitation--legally unprotected, or--at least--this is true in most of the states.)
But LDS-type polygamy (whether the adults involved are LDS or not) is probably going to prove to be one of the easiest forms of non-monogamous marriage to deal with legally, and it--as a trial balloon for all types of non-monogamous marriage, will undoubtedly reveal at least some of the areas which are going to need further thought and further legal tweaking before non-monogamous marriage as a entire whole is anywhere near ready for Prime Time.

The Ride Down Mt. Morgan by Arthur Miller.
[#img] http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... Morgan.jpg[/img]
The play is about a certain Lyman Felt, a bigamist, who wakes up in the hospital after a car crash - with both wives at his bedside.
In the play, "Miller presents the supposition that monogamy is an unnatural and unattainable state imposed on men by rigid but unnecessary social convention."

by the way the play we watched was an extra enjoyable performance --- a fifty-seat studio theatre, the actors are one step before our feet --- unfortunately our budget only rarely enables this type of entertainments.

Re: Traditional Marriage is Polygamy
Technology will necessitate polygamy. Already we see millions of young Japanese men giving up on relationships and marriage altogether. Many are substituting electronic manga-like girlfriends on their I-phones and go on dates with them, have conversations and, well...you know. The Japanese are also rapidly developing human-like robots to care for the elderly population as there just aren't many babies being born anymore. Once robot technology meets more advanced artificial intelligence many men will opt for a robot over a real woman.
That of course means a future of lesbians or maybe even seven women begging every true alpha male left to be his bride if just to give her babies.

No need for marriage polygamous or otherwise just to have babies.
