Over on Sic et Non, Daniel C. Peterson is making yet another lament for the MI’s “new direction” – you know, the evolution of the institute from an apologia clearinghouse to a center for scholarly and legitimate Mormon studies – in this post about Kirk Caudle resigning from the Church. Kirk Caudle host(ed) a podcast called Mormon Book Review, which a year or so ago was made a part of the MI. DCP’s likely motive in posting news of the resignation, which isn’t public and isn’t accessible on Caudle’s Facebook page unless you’re one of his “friends”, is to give the world a big “See, I told you so.”

Daniel C. Peterson doesn’t actually mention BYU or the MI by name, but there on the OP is a photo of the gravestone of Elder Neal A. Maxwell, the namesake of the MI, and a man whom the “old guard” mistakenly seems to think was in favor of scorched-earth apologetics. Under the photo of Elder Maxwell’s headstone is a caption from Daniel C. Peterson that says, “I miss him deeply, as do others.”

In all fairness to the MI, I can’t find any of the podcasts presently available online in which Kirk Caudle is the host. All I can find are podcasts hosted by Blair Hodges. Maybe they knew this was coming in advance.

I'm sure DCP feels it’s just a matter of time until Gerald Bradford reluctantly opens his Rolodex and gives the “old guard” a call to apologize and ask them all to return to MI.

It is my understanding that BYU will publish an essay which will explain why the OMID's were ousted.

I got a sneak peek at the first couple of paragraphs.

In theology and practice, Brigham Young University embraces the universal human family. Latter-day Saint scripture and teachings affirm that God loves all of His children and makes salvation available to all. God created the many diverse scholars and intellectuals and esteems them all equally.
Today, the University disavows the theories advanced in the past that apologetics is a sign of divine favor, or that it reflects actions in a undergrad life; that belief in the documentary hypothesis is a sin; or that liberals or people of any other party are inferior in any way to anyone else. School leaders today unequivocally condemn all such beliefs, past and present, in any form.

I have officially resigned from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I know that some of you already know and I know that many others have heard a variety of other rumors about my membership being threatened. Therefore, let me set the record straight.

At its heart, Mormonism is communal. I love that community with all of my heart. I have tried my best to give whatever I had to that community and time and time again I felt rejected by the communal family that I so closely love and cherish. My academic study of religion started with a love of people. The reason I continue to study and teach it today is for the same reason.

Let me be clear that I have a deep love, affection, and testimony of Joseph Smith, a very personal relationship and testimony of The Book of Mormon, and most of all, I believe in Jesus Christ. However, I cannot in good faith, and for the betterment of my family, continue to be associated with the church as it stands in the 21st century. I cannot justify staying because of a growing divide between me and it both religious and morally.

I am truly blessed to have an amazing wife and children who support me and me 100%. The respect and sustain my choice in this. This is probably the hardest choice that I have ever made in my life and is quite the paradigm shift.

With that said, if you have nothing but negative things to say or simply want to change me mind please do not post on this thread. I know my threads are usually open season to say whatever you would like, but if you only have negatively, please do not post it here.

I am more than happy to talk with individuals if need be. I am sure that people probably have questions. I thought it better to just get it all out there at once though rather than just continue to have rumors flying around.

I am honestly having a hard time tying in Dan's Patheos article with an attack against Bradford. Sorry, but I just don't see it. Of course, I am also confused about the correlation between the grave site picture of Elder Maxwell and this particular announcement. It is a question I will ask Dan. It sounds like there are several folks who have read his blog who are as confused as I am about it.

Will has kind of gone off on a tangent about separating the wheat from the tares, but that doesn't really explain exactly what point Dan was specifically trying to make.

The gravestone point seems fairly straight forward to me Liz. The way I read it, Dan is saying that Maxwell's legacy is dead (which seems a direct shot at the current direction of MI) and because of that perceived inability to "defend" the church by way of the old guard at the MI, people are leaving.

I placed "defend" in quotes because I do not agree with many of Dan's methods to defend the church.

I am glad to hear DCP didn't make public something Kirk had not already.

I will be interested in finding out the point in the juxtaposition of DCP's announcing this in one sentence on his blog right under a photo of NAM's tombstone.

It does kinda sound like he is spiking the football.
