Ebola outbreak prompts evacuation of LDS missionaries from two African nations

The LDS Church is transferring all of its 274 missionaries out of Sierra Leone and Liberia, where the deadliest-known Ebola outbreak in history has killed hundreds of people, including two Mormons.

The church announced the decision Friday, the same day the World Health Organization's director general said the disease was moving faster than efforts to curb it, which could lead to catastrophic consequences that include a “high risk” it will spread to other countries.

“We are aware of two members who have died from the Ebola virus,” church spokeswoman Jessica Moody said, apparently one in Sierra Leone and one in Liberia.

All Mormon missionaries serving in the two West African nations are being moved as a precautionary measure. They are being reassigned to a variety of other missions: “Missionaries who have been called to serve in these countries and an additional three missionaries in the Ghana MTC will be reassigned,” Moody said.

I think it depends on your definition of a missionary.

There are missionaries in the world that seek out the disadvantaged, poor and those in ill health and with no medical aid to do what they can for humanity. Some of them do this out of a feeling of Christian obligation to help those in need. Some do it out of a feeling that those more fortunate should be willing to help those less fortunate, no questions asked. I've known a few of them.

There are also people from this country that join the Peace Corps and similar organizations that work for the betterment of the people they are sent to serve. I consider them missionaries of a sort, as well. My nephew is doing that right now.

Then, there is a vast army of adolescents that are pressured socially to go (at their parent's expense) to sell club memberships door to door.

I think it's best if these poor kids are kept out of danger. They didn't sign up for that.

It is ridiculous to criticize the church for being prudent and not contributing to making the problem worse. These Christian missionaries were physicians on medical missions, not punk 18 year olds on bikes knocking on doors. Pulling these kids out of a collision with deadly contageon isn't just about the safety of the missionaries. They are removing highly mobile vectors. Getting irrelevant people out of the incubator is sensible and laudible. Christian sects are also removing people who are not essential to the epidemiological emergency. Even the medical mission with the infected doctors pulled non-medical, nonessential personnel out.

As of Sep 11, CDC posted an alert to restrict all non-essential travel to Ebola stricken countries. Proselyting is non-essential. I'm sure there is a need for help, but flooding the hot zone with a bunch of enthusiastic, non-medical/essential internationals, who are not working on the epidemic in a highly controlled and coordinated fashion, is an epidemiological nightmare. I hope travel restrictions and recommendations will be taken seriously. It was major news and concern that we were flying 2-3 infected people back to the states, to the most secure containment facilities we have. If you have hundreds of westerners roaming the country without the training and equipment to reduce exposure, you could quickly end up with a horde of infected Americans wanting to fly home.

I work in health care. Right now, I know there are unbelievably courageous healthcare workers heading right into the teeth of this ominous situation. There are courageous Mormons putting themselves in harm's way, as well as Christians and non-believers. To turn such valiant humanitarian service into a sort of faith measuring contest is sickening. These people are all complete bad-asses of the highest order.

The Mormons unlike all the other volunteers and missionaries should have nothing to worry about because they have their ultra super protective special underwear.

I agee. I enjoy ribbing the church as much as the next guy, but keeping missionaries there could potentially kill them.
