They were 'married' when?

The authority for eternal marriage was 'restored' when?
“If paying tithing means that you can’t pay for water or electricity, pay tithing. If paying tithing means that you can’t pay your rent, pay tithing. Even if paying tithing means that you don’t have enough money to feed your family, pay tithing." Ensign/2012/12

How could they be married?

Bigamy was illegal. Affairs were also illegal, for what it's worth.

Was there even a temple?

The church had not gotten its supposed sealing power.

All church scripture at that time claimed monogamy as the One True Way.

Lets see... So the Kirtland temple wasn't finished until 1836, so Elijah hadn't restored the sealing power yet. Somewhere between 1833-1835 Joseph has a super secret marriage to Fanny, so secret that the vice president of the church Oliver Cowdrey calls it a "dirty, nasty, filthy affair" and gets exed for it.

And it's stuff like that had I known of it prior to my mission that would've convinced me the Mormon church wasn't what it claimed to be. Apologists can lay the blame at the feet of members for being ignorant all they want, but it wasn't until the advent of the Internet that I learned of these things. It's not like they were teaching them at seminary, and historical information like it certainly wasn't maintained in the Ward's library.

Had I known faithful Mormon men at some point would be insinuating someone like Ms. Schinlder was a whore and therefore her account ref Mr. Smith's advances couldn't be trusted... I never would've invested the energy into this cult like I had.

The sooner the Mormon church goes the way of the CoC the better it'll be for everyone. This One True Church business creates a lot of obfuscation, slander, and outright lying. It's been that way from the beginning, and is still going strong all these decades later. Pity.

Given Fanny's age, more like honey boo-boo'ing Fanny in the hay.

How much can we trust these second hand stories about Joseph's "marriage" to Fanny Alger? Any chance people were re-inventing history?

Most likely the Fanny affair led to Plural Marriage.
